Philadelphia Phillies Midseason Top 50 Prospects

The overall state of the Phillies minor league organization took a hit this year with trades, promotions and slumps. A few players were rushed to the majors to fill in for the abundance of injuries the team experience and gave mixed results. Pitching does remain a strength up and down the levels both for the rotation and bullpen. On offense, it’s a different story. Other than Alec Bohm, there aren’t many impact hitting prospects close to the majors yet but a solid 2019 draft and better production from other recent picks are giving a reason for optimism. The Phillies took an interesting approach in this year’s draft where they selected many hard-throwing pitchers who have command issues so we’ll see how that strategy plays out over the next few years. The team did well with its first two hitting picks, shortstops Bryson Stott and Jamari Baylor. My Phillies preseason Top 50 prospects list was posted in January. As for now, let’s take a look at how the prospects are doing so far this year and who will help the team in the future.

Prospects1500 tiers:
Tier 1:
Players with high expectations of both making the majors and playing at an All-Star level for a number of years
Tier 2: Players with an above average expectation of making the majors and being a solid contributor
Tier 3: Players with an average expectation of making the majors and being a solid contributor
Tier 4: Players who have the potential of making the majors, or have a high likelihood of making the majors but providing minimal impact (e.g. middle reliever, low-ceiling UT guys)
Tier 5: Players who are worth keeping an eye on, but likely to never make a team’s 40-man roster

All stats are from games played through July 14th, 2019.

Tier 1:

1. Alec Bohm, 3B (2019 Preseason Rank: 2)
Age: 23, DOB: 08/03/1996
2019 Highest Level: Reading AA
2019 Stats: .322/.392/.531 50 R, 11 HR, 50 RBI, 4 SB (across three levels)
So far so good! Bohm bounced back strong this year after struggling somewhat last year. He admitted he was tired last year and fought through an injury so it’s nice to see what a healthy Alec Bohm has been able to do across three levels this year. He’s shown great power to go with his on base skills. We are looking at a future middle-of-the-order hitter here and that future should start April 2020.

2. Spencer Howard, RHP (2019 Preseason Rank: 11)
Age: 23, DOB: 07/28/1996
2019 Highest Level:: Clearwater A+
Stats: 2.10 ERA. 0.82 WHIP, 34.1 IP, 52 K, 7 BB (across three levels)
Howard has had a very strong year in 2019. He was shut down for about two months with a shoulder injury but hasn’t missed a beat at all. The former 2nd rounder is showing velocity and control. He has the makings of a future 2 starter in the big leagues.

Tier 2:

3. Adonis Medina, RHP (2019 Preseason Rank: 3)
Age: 22, DOB: 12/18/1996
2019 Highest Level: Reading AA
Stats: 3.90 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 67 IP, 46 K, 25 BB
Medina came into the year looking to build on a solid 2018 but has struggled at times. He still has the makings of a future contributor but needs to harness his command more and work on his consistency. Some nights, he looks like an ace and other nights, quite the opposite. He’ll look to continue his development this year. He could be a trade-piece if the organization decides to buy at the deadline.

4. Adam Haseley, OF (2019 Preseason Rank: 4)
Age: 23, DOB: 04/12/1996
2019 Highest Level:: Philadelphia Phillies MLB
2019 Stats: .275/.360/.481 38 R, 10 HR, 30 RBI, 5 SB (across two levels)
Haseley was called up to the big league team after injuries to a few key outfielders. After only two games, he got injured and spent time in the IL. He was promoted back to the majors after a rehab stint in the minors, one of which games I reviewed here. Haseley can help your fantasy team with his solid power/speed tools.

5. Francisco Morales, RHP (2019 Preseason Rank: 7)
Age: 19, DOB: 10/27/1999
2019 Highest Level:: Lakewood A
Preseason Rank: 7
Stats: 3.90 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 62.1 IP, 87 K, 28 BB
Morales has turned it on the last month giving up only 3 runs since June 1st. We are witnessing the development of a future dominant starter.

6. Luis Garcia, SS (2019 Preseason Rank: 9)
Age: 18, DOB: 10/01/2000
2019 Highest Level: Lakewood A
Stats: .195/.279/.281 24 R, 4 HR, 26 RBI, 8 SB (across three levels)
The stats don’t look pretty but Garcia is very young and we can’t discount his 2018 year. He’s been improving month over month and has been heating up as the weather has been getting warmer.

7. Bryson Stott, SS (2019 Preseason Rank: Unranked)
Age: 21 DOB: 10/06/1997
2019 Highest Level: Williamsport A-
Stats: .625/.700/1.250 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 0 SB
The 1st round pick from UNLV has been praised for his maturity and approach. He has across-the-board tools and should move up quickly.

Tier 3

8. Jhailyn Ortiz, OF (2019 Preseason Rank: 6)
Age: 20, DOB: 11/18/1998
2019 Highest Level:: Clearwater A+
Stats: .226/.299/.436 45 R, 15 HR, 50 RBI, 2 SB
Ortiz has been showing power but not much in the way of a hit-tool. He’s still young and developing. He runs hot and cold but has big power potential.

9. Enyel De Los Santos, RHP (2019 Preseason Rank: 8)
Age: 24, DOB: 12/25/1995
2019 Highest Level: Philadelphia Phillies MLB
Stats: 4.06 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 51 IP, 56 K, 17 BB
De Los Santos has been up and down going from starting to relieving and back again this year.

10. Matt Vierling, OF (2019 Preseason Rank: 12)
Age: 22, DOB: 09/16/1996
2019 Highest Level: Clearwater A+
Stats: .240/.302/.347 30 R, 4 HR, 32 RBI, 17 SB (across three levels)
Began the year strong out of the gates but slumped since the calendar turned to May. The steals and home runs are about what I expected but the average has slumped. I still see a good outfielder who will help fantasy teams in about two to three years.

11. J.D. Hammer, RHP (2019 Preseason Rank: 24)
Age: 25, DOB: 07/12/1994
2019 Highest Level: Philadelphia Phillies MLB
2019 Stats: 1.61 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 22.1 IP, 29 K, 4 BB
Hammer was called up to help a bullpen decimated by injuries and has pitched very well in the majors.

12. Ranger Suarez, LHP (2019 Preseason Rank: 6)
Age: 23, DOB: 08/26/1995
2019 Highest Level: Philadelphia Phillies MLB
Stats: 5.68 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 38 IP, 32 K, 10 BB
Suarez struggled in his few starts in the big leagues but has found success as a reliever there. We could be seeing Seranthony Dominguez Volume 2 here.

13. Damon Jones, LHP (2019 Preseason Rank: Unranked)
Age: 24, DOB: 09/30/1994
2019 Highest Level: Lehigh Valley AAA
2019 Stats: 1.47 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 85.2 IP, 125 K, 37 BB (across three levels)
Jones seemingly came out of nowhere this season to post strong numbers and has been promoted three times already. He made a change this off-season where he focused on pitching out of the stretch and it’s working very well for him. He’s averaging over 13 K/9 for the year. Jones has put himself in position to get a call-up possibly later this year as the team lacks a strong left-handed starter.

14. Cole Irvin, LHP (2019 Preseason Rank: 13)
Age: 25, DOB: 01/31/1994
2019 Highest Level: Philadelphia Phillies MLB
2019 Stats: 3.76 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 67 IP, 44 K, 10 BB
Irvin’s lack of a put-out pitch and his average velocity was exposed in his time in the majors. His results were a mixed bag but the low K/9 limits his ceiling. He should be back up later in the year.

15. Kyle Young LHP (2019 Preseason Rank: 14)
Age: 21, DOB: 12/02/1997
2019 Highest Level: Clearwater A+
2019 Stats: 4.29 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 21 IP, 25 K, 1 BB
Young was having a successful year for the Threshers but got hurt and underwent Tommy John Surgery halting his development.

16. Austin Listi, OF (2019 Preseason Rank: 21)
Age: 25, DOB: 11/05/1993
2019 Highest Level: Lehigh Valley AAA
2019 Stats: .254/.365/.460 46 R, 15 HR, 56 RBI, 1 SB (across two levels)
Listi has been on fire since moving up to Triple-A. He’s shown power and a good ability to work at-bats and get on base.

17. Mickey Moniak, OF (2019 Preseason Rank: 26)
Age: 21, DOB: 05/13/1998
2019 Highest Level: Reading AA
2019 Stats: .265/.321/.433 43 R, 4 HR, 39 RBI, 9 SB
Moniak has really improved since mid-season 2018. He struggled in April but did a 180 in May and June. While he may not ever be a superstar, he can still make the majors.

18. Deivy Grullon, C (2019 Preseason Rank: 22)
Age: 23, DOB: 02/17/1996
2019 Highest Level:: Lehigh Valley AAA
2019 Stats: .306/.369/.508 36 R, 12 HR, 50 RBI, 1 SB
Grullon was having himself a spectacular year with many people pushing for him to be called up to replace Andrew Knapp as the number 2 catcher. Expect him to get to the majors by September.

19. Kyle Glogoski, RHP (2019 Preseason Rank: Unranked)
Age: 20, DOB: 01/06/1999
2019 Highest Level: Clearwater A+
2019 Stats: 1.90 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 47.1 IP, 65 K, 16 BB (across two levels)
Glogoski has built on his previous success from 2018 with another very solid season with the Threshers. The New Zealand native has shot up the rankings list with another strong showing this year.

Tier 4

20. Rafael Marchan, C (2019 Preseason Rank: 30)
Age: 20, DOB: 02/25/1999

  1. I know things can change from the date when this list was produced to the end of the minor league season but Erik Miller is probably now in your Tier 2/3 list. MLB Pipeline has him as the #9 prospect and highest rated LHP with his stats through three levels supported the ranking..
