2023 MLB Draft Rankings: 51-500

That is right! I have expanded my ranking from 400 to 500 this year. Why? The answer is simple: I finished my 400, looked at the names of guys that didn’t make the list, and couldn’t cut it off there so I expanded to 500. Even now there are very talented players who did not make the list like RJ Schreck at Vanderbilt, Walker Martin’s teammate at Eaton HS in Colorado, Tate Smith, and one of the Witherspoon twins at Northwest Florida State, Malachi (his brother Kyson did make the cut). This just goes to show how deep this year’s draft is especially at the end of day two and into day three.

Unlike the top 50–which you can read here!—this grouping will not have commentary on every player, instead I will summarize each grouping of 50 and highlight names of note.

99. Caden Sorrell, OF, Marcus (TX)

100. James Ellwanger, RHP, Magnolia West (TX)

Joe Whitman is the first college lefty on the board and may be the best chance to prevent this year’s first round from being the first since 1979 to not see a collegiate lefty come off the board. There are plenty of names that were once considered potential first rounders:  Tanner Witt, Maui Ahua, and Travis Honeyman but injury (Witt and Honeyman) or inconsistent performance (Ahuna) have caused stocks to drop. Sammy Stafura impressed at the MLB Draft Combine and could see a late rise in his stock, while Brandon Sproat is in a spot.  The decision to head back to Florida rather than signing as a third rounder a year ago may have paid off. Another Gator, Josh Rivera, may have been the player to raise his stock more than anyone in the NCAA tournament. He continues to show off his above average power while playing a very good shortstop, removing doubt about his ability to stick at the position. Ty Floyd is coming off one of the truly great performances in College World Series history, which will only help his draft stock.

147. Jake Bloss, RHP, Georgetown

148. Brock Vradenburg, 1B, Michigan State

149. Carson Montgomery, RHP, Florida State

150. Cole Stokes, RHP, Redondo Union (CA)

This grouping has some of my favorite prep prospects from last summer in Zion Rose and Justin Lee although both saw their stocks stagnate, if not decrease some, throughout the season. Luke Shliger is a rare catcher who served as his team’s leadoff man this season, and rightfully so as he had an excellent season. Just ahead of him is Quinn Mathews who gained national recognition after his 159-pitch complete game against Texas in the Super Regionals. George Klassen has one of the biggest arms in the class, although his best comp may by Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn from the movie Major League as he has some of the most inconsistent command in the class.

196. Connor Burns, C, Long Beach State

197. Cal Fisher, MIF, Deerfield (WI)

198. Blake Dickerson, LHP, Ocean Lakes (VA)

199. Andrew Lindsey, LHP, Tennessee

200. Nicholas Judice, RHP, Louisiana-Monroe

The two key cogs in the Oral Roberts run to the College World Series are Cade Denton and Jonah Cox. They find themselves in this grouping, while Andrew Lindsey cracks the top 200 after taking last year away from baseball for personal reasons. There are a few catchers in this grouping, but Connor Burns is the best defensive catcher available in the draft in some time and brings a ton of value even though there are real questions with the bat. The loudest bat in the group is easily Roc Riggio, but there are some swing and miss and positional concerns.

247. Case Matter, RHP, Washington

248. Colton Hartman, LHP, Lebanon (OH)

249. Wyatt Huderpohl, RHP, Charlotte

250. Jake Eddington, RHP, Missouri State

Eriq Swan owns a triple digit fastball, and there are guys like Laif Palmer who went from being recruited by D2 schools just over a year ago to a likely day two pick on July 10. Jack Moss and Joey Vetrano could not possess more different styles of 1B: Moss is a hit first guy and Vetrano is a power first bat, but both have had real success at the college level. One of the most intriguing names is Duce Robinson, a guy with plus power that was absent this year because he focused on football, where he is one of the top tight end prospects and is set to attend USC.

251. Aidan Knack, RHP, Bishop Verot (FL)

297. Bryson Ware, 3B, Auburn

298. Colby Halter, MIF, Florida

299. Dean West, OF, Notre Dame (CA)

300. Zyhir Hope, OF, Colonial Forge (VA)

Nigel Belgrave is one of the more fun bullpen arms to watch when he is on, but the command comes and goes. Drew Bowser was once considered a prospect with first round upside, but his lack of consistent contact has really hurt him. However, he showed what he can do when he makes contact sending numerous no doubters into the trees during Stanford’s Super Regional against Texas. One name there is no concern regarding contact rates or the adjustment to wood bat is Rikuu Nishida, who regularly stepped to the plate with a wood bat while at Oregon.

348. Tate McKee, RHP/3B, Mt. Paran Christian (GA)

349. Ryan Harrahill, RHP, Elkhorn (NE)

350. Austin Troesser, RHP, Missouri

James DeCremer III pitches with as much effort as anyone in the class, but the stuff is real and is a lot of fun to watch. Ryan Bruno‘s command issues really hurt his stock down the stretch as he was once an easy top 300 prospect. I am still not totally comfortable with him this high, but the stuff is legit and borders on elite when on. One guy command is no issue for is Lucas Gordon who won’t light up any radar guns but will attack the zone and have guys off-balance with a really good change. I could see him having a Tommy Milone type career, where he isn’t a regular member of a rotation, but you look up at the end of his career and he has more than a decade of big league time under his belt.

400. Blake Morningstar, RHP, Wyalusing (PA)

A trio of UCLA Bruins make it here. Darius Perry has been a leader for them behind the dish and Jake Brooks has been a solid member of the rotation, but Charles Harrison is a guy gone overlooked by many but advanced metrics suggest he could be a steal in the draft. Magdiel Cotto is one of seemingly countless players in the draft this year with incredible stuff, but incredibly inconsistent command, that saw him go from a key member of the Kentucky staff to a guy they seemed afraid to turn to in the biggest moments.

450. Matt Evans, OF, Glendale (CAN)

Chase Jaworsky would be the star bat coming out of Colorado if not for the incredible talent of Walker Martin, and he could easily hear his name called on day two of the draft. Charles McAdoo is a powerful bat with plenty of moving parts, but there is much more power than the numbers suggest. I think he can play second at the next level. MJ Seo was once considered to be a real two-way prospect, but it has since become clear his future is on the mound.

Tre Phelps and Jarren Purify were regulars on the summer showcase circuit a year ago, but they have cooled off and now could very well make it to campus. Izack Tiger put up great numbers in a hitter friendly JuCo league in Kansas, and there have been reports of him into the triple digits with his fastball. Poncho Ruiz has pop in the bat and is a guy I truly believe can stick behind the dish given his lateral mobility and confidence his pitchers have in him.
