Prospects of the Week: July 17 – July 23

Each week during the Minor League Baseball season we pick the hitting and pitching prospects from each level (Triple-A, Double-A, High-A, Single-A and Rookie leagues) who, in our opinion, had the best week. The team awards the Prospects of the Week hitters and pitchers for each level, while also presenting other names at each level that are just as deserving of POTW honors. Feel free to reply in the comments with any player who deserves to be mentioned that may not have made our cut.

Any issues with this week’s POTW? Did we miss anyone deserving? Hit us up and set us straight! As always, tweet us @Prospects1500 when you see a great performance that warrants consideration for Prospect of the Week. Enjoy, and make sure you’re keeping an eye out for these prospects in your dynasty leagues.

Triple-A

HITTER: Spencer Horwitz, 1B (Blue Jays Preseason #11)
Buffalo Bisons (6 G, .536/.567/1.000/1.567, 15 H, 2 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 6 R, 2 BB, 2 SB)
After a brief stint with the Blue Jays in late June, Horwitz is back to crushing Triple-A pitching. Primarily a 1B he is a bit blocked at the MLB level, but he has played in a little in LF with the hopes that they can get his bat in the lineup. Speed is not a huge part of his game, but a 1B that will also get you 8-10 stolen bases is a nice bonus.
International League Player of the Week!

Honorable Mentions:
Ceddanne Rafaela, OF (Red Sox #3)
Worcester Red Sox (5 G, .391/.417/.957/1.374, 9 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 4 R, BB)
Masyn Winn, SS (Cardinals #2)
Memphis Redbirds (5 G, .455/.520/.909/1.429, 10 H, 4 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 9 R, 2 BB)
Do the Cardinals make moves at the deadline that speeds up Winn’s MLB callup? At this point what could it hurt?
Yohel Pozo, C (Athletics NR)
Las Vegas Aviators (6 G, .500/.481/.769/1.250, 13 H, 4 2B, HR, 10 RBI, 7 R)
Pacific Coast League Player of the Week!
Max Schuemann, IF (Athletics #34)
Las Vegas Aviators (5 G, .400/.478/.850/1.328, 8 H, 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 2 BB, SB)

PITCHER: Connor Phillips, RHP (Reds #15)
Louisville Bats (1 GS, 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 11 K)
International League Pitcher of the Week!
Phillips, who came to the Reds in the Winker/Suarez deal, is vying to be the next Reds rookie to make his major league debut. He handled Double-A hitters and after 4 stellar starts in Triple-A the Reds just may make the move. In 4 starts with Louisville, Phillips is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA and 12 walks to 23 strikeouts. The walk numbers do look rough but he has good command as demonstrated by his Double-A numbers of 27/111. He is pushing his way into the Reds upcoming plans. (@darylhauck)

Honorable Mentions:
Ben Brown, RHP (Cubs #13)
Iowa Cubs (1 GS, 5 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K)
Cole Winn, RHP (Rangers #10)
Round Rock Express (1 G, 5 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 6 K)
Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week!
Bryce Jarvis, RHP (Diamondbacks #25)
Reno Aces (2 GS, 11.2 IP, 9 H, R, 4 BB, 12 K)

Double-A

HITTER: Jackson Chourio, OF (Brewers #1)
Biloxi Shuckers (6 G, .483/.531/.862/1.393, 14 H, 3 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 9 R, 2 BB, 5 SB)
Jackson Chourio is a stud. Period. As a 19-year-old in Double-A he leads the Southern League in hits, is second in RBI, fourth in stolen bases, and tied for 5th in home runs. Again he is 19. He will likely be in the big leagues before he can legally have an adult beverage.

Honorable Mentions:
Tyler Hardman, CI (Yankees #37)
Somerset Patriots (6 G, .474/.583/1.158/1.741, 9 H, 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R, 5 BB, SB)
Eastern League Player of the Week!
Jordan Beck, OF (Rockies #16)
Hartford Yard Goats (5 G, .333/.364/1.000/1.364, 7 H, 3 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, BB)
Blake Dunn, OF (Reds NR)
Chattanooga Lookouts (5 G, .565/.577/1.087/1.664, 13 H, 2 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 10 R, BB, 3 SB)
Southern League Player of the Week!
Tyler Black, 2B (Brewers #8)
Biloxi Shuckers (6 G, .444/.531/.889/1.420, 12 H, 2 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 10 R, 5 BB, 3 SB)

A.J. Vukovich, 3B (Diamondbacks #15)
Amarillo Sod Poodles (5 G, .350/.381/.900/1.281, 7 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 5 R, BB, SB)

PITCHER: Emerson Hancock, RHP (Mariners #6)
Arkansas Travelers (1 GS, 7 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K)
Texas League Pitcher of the Week!
Hancock, the former Georgia Bulldog, is the highest draft pick of the Jerry Dipoto era. Unfortunately a pandemic and injuries have slowed his development to date. A healthy Double-A season in 2023 will be very good for him. His season has had it’s ups and downs so far, but his last two starts have been stellar. In 13 IP, he has only given up 4 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, while striking out 14.

Honorable Mentions:
Griff McGarry, RHP (Phillies #6)
Reading Fightin Phils (1 GS, 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K)

Kyle Tyler, RHP (Mariners NR)
Arkansas Travelers (1 GS, 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K)
Luis De Avila, LHP (Braves NR)
Mississippi Braves (1 GS, 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K)
Southern League Pitcher of the Week!
Luis Palacios, LHP (Marlins #35)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos (1 GS, 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K)
Ty Madden, RHP (Tigers #4)
Erie SeaWolves (2 GS, 9.2 IP, 5 H, R, 4 BB, 18K)

High-A

HITTER: Sean Roby, 3B (Giants NR)
Eugene Emeralds (5 G, .381/.435/1.09/1.530, 8 H, 3 2B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 5 R, 2 BB)
Northwest League Player of the Week!
Roby is a 25-year-old in High-A so you have to put things in perspective, but a four home run, seven extra base hit week is POTW worthy nonetheless.

Honorable Mentions:
Spencer Jones, OF (Yankees #6)
Hudson Valley Renegades (5 G, .381/.409/.762/1.171, 8 H, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 5 R, BB, SB)
Je’Von Ward, OF (Brewers NR)
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (5 G, .409/.435/.864/1.299, 9 H, 4 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 7 R)
Gavin Cross, OF (Royals #1)
Quad Cities River Bandits (6 G, .348/.400/.739/1.139, 8 H, 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 SB)
Dayan Frias, SS (Guardians NR)
Lake County Captains (6 G, .435/.552/.739/1.291, 10 H, 4 2B, HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 6 BB, SB)
Midwest League Player of the Week!
Gustavo Campero, C (Angels NR)
Tri-City Dust Devils (4 G, .667/.765/1.000/1.765, 8 H, 2 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 3 R, 3 BB, SB)

PITCHER: Drew Thorpe, RHP (Yankees #15)
Hudson Valley Renegades (1 GS, 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 13 K)
South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week!
Thorpe has been dominant this year and should be in Top-100 territory soon. In 16 starts (99 IP) this season with Hudson Valley he is 10-1 with a 2.08 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and has 124 K to only 31 walks. Last week against Brooklyn he matched his career high in innings (eight), set a new career high in strikeouts (thirteen), and was perfect through 5.1 IP. His stock is about to skyrocket.

Honorable Mentions:
Angel Bastardo, RHP (Red Sox NR)
Greenville Drive (1 GS, 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 14 K)
Cade Gibson, LHP (Marlins NR)
Beloit Sky Carp (1 GS, 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K)

Nick Sinacola, RHP (Giants NR)
Eugene Emeralds (2 GS, 10 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 7 K)
Northwest League Pitcher of the Week!

Single-A

HITTER: Luke Adams, 3B (Brewers #47)
Carolina Mudcats (5 G, .588/.667/1.118/1.785, 10 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 9 R, 4 BB, 3 SB)
Carolina League Player of the Week!
The former Michigan State commit chose to sign with the Brew Crew after being drafted in the 12th round last year. All told, he is putting together a pretty solid first season in affiliated ball. Most encouraging for the 6’4″ 19-year-old is that he walks as much as he strikes out. He is another CI that looks to have a little speed which could be a nice bonus.

Honorable Mentions:
Bryce Willits, 3B (White Sox #3B)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (6 G, .391/.500/.826/1.326, 9H, 2B, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 4 R, 4 BB)
Samuel Zavala, OF (Padres #3)
Lake Elsinore Storm (6 G, .350/.500/.850/1.350, 7 H, 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 9 R, 7 BB, 3 SB)
Jace Avina, OF (Brewers #30)
Carolina Mudcats (5 G, .476/.500/.905/1.405, 10 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 7 R, SB)
Josiah Sightler, 1B (Pirates NR)
Bradenton Marauders (6 G, .542/.586/1.000/1.586, 13 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R, 2 BB)
Florida State League Player of the Week!
Josh Hood, SS (Mariners #28)
Modesto Nuts (6 G, .522/.577/.783/1.360, 12 H, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, BB)
California League Player of the Week!
Michael Curialle, IF (Cardinals NR)
Palm Beach Cardinals (6 G, .522/.577/.783/1.360, 8 H, 2 2B, HR, 7 RBI, 6 R, 3 BB)
The 2022 12th round draft pick is rising up my rankings. The former UCLA Bruin currently profiles as a utility player, but he is the type of guy that the Cardinals often get more out of.

PITCHER: Ryan Ramsey, LHP (Royals NR)
Columbia Fireflies (1 GS, 6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K)
Royals fans will take any good news they can get right now. How about this? In his last four starts (after returning from injury), Ramsey has not allowed a single run on five hits in 17.2 innings while striking out 26.

Honorable Mentions:
Austin Peterson, RHP (Guardians NR)
Lynchburg Hillcats (1 GS, 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 4 K)
Mason Albright, LHP (Angels #26)
Inland Empire 66ers (1 GS, 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K)
Josh White, RHP (Marlins NR)
Jupiter Hammerheads (1 GS, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K)
Florida State League Pitcher of the Week!
Joel Hurtado, RHP (Angels NR)
Inland Empire 66ers (1 GS, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K)
California League Pitcher of the Week!

Rookie Leagues

HITTER: Lazaro Montes, OF (Mariners #9)
ACL Mariners (5 G, .353/.476/1.000/1.476, 6 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 7 R, 4 BB)
Arizona Complex League Player of the Week!
The good: 5 homeruns, 24 RBI, and 25 runs scored in 85 AB. The bad: he isn’t very good defensively and is uber aggressive at the plate (28% K rate). He is 18-years-old and has plenty of development left, but if he doesn’t improve defensively it will put a lot of pressure on the bat.

Honorable Mentions:
Carlos Jimenez, OF (Mariners #24)
ACL Mariners (5 G, .556/.636/.722/1.358, 10 H, 3 2B, 5 RBI, 8 R, 3 BB, 3 SB)
Endy Rodriguez, 2B (Twins NR)
FCL Twins (3 G, .600/.636/1.300/1.936, 6 H, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, BB)
Florida Complex League Player of the Week!
No Twins fans you didn’t miss a trade, this isn’t THE Endy Rodriguez, but this Endy does carry a 1.470 OPS in the FCL. Does that help?
Kevyn Castillo, OF (Angels NR)
DSL Angels (6 G, .375/.444/.583/1.027, 9 H, 2 2B, HR, 5 RBI, 8 R, 3 BB, 5 SB)
Braylin Morel, OF (Rangers NR)
DSL Rangers (4 G, .357/.471/1.071/1.542, 5 H, 2B, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 5 R, 3 BB, SB)
Dominican Summer League Player of the Week!
Bairon Ledesma, IF (Rockies NR)
DSL Rockies (5 G, .500/.545/.550/1.095, 10 H, 2B, 2 RBI, 6 R, 2 BB, 4 SB)

PITCHER: Jeter Martinez, RHP (Mariners #44)
DSL Mariners (1 GS, 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 8 K)
Dominican Summer League Pitcher of the Week!
It’s a Mariners Rookie league sweep! It is a small sample size for sure (33.1 IP), but 44 K’s and a 0.69 WHIP is a great start. Depending on the depth of your dynasty league Martinez might need to be on your radar.

Honorable Mentions:
Redinson Gomez, RHP (Rockies NR)
DSL Rockies (1 GS, 7 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 4 K)
Samuel Colmenares, RHP (Blue Jays NR)
DSL Blue Jays (1 GS, 7 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 4 K)
Francis Texido, LHP (Angels NR)
DSL Angels (1 GS, 6 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 8 K)
Frankeli Arias, LHP (White Sox NR)
ACL White Sox (1 GS, 6 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 6 K)
Arizona Complex League Pitcher of the Week!
Daniel Guerra, RHP (Blue Jays NR)
FCL Blue Jays (1 GS, 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 7 K)
