Prospects of the Week: August 28 – September 3

Each week during the Minor League Baseball season we pick the hitting and pitching prospects from each level (Triple-A, Double-A, High-A, Single-A, and the Rookie Leagues) who, in our opinion, had the best week. The team awards the Prospects of the Week hitters and pitchers for each level, while also presenting other names at each level that are just as deserving of POTW honors. Feel free to reply in the comments with any player who deserves to be mentioned that may not have made our cut.

Any issues with this week’s POTW? Did we miss anyone deserving? Hit us up and set us straight! As always, tweet us @Prospects1500 when you see a great performance that warrants consideration for Prospect of the Week. Enjoy, and make sure you’re keeping an eye out for these prospects in your dynasty leagues.

Triple-A

HITTER: Justyn-Henry Malloy, 3B/OF (Tigers #7)
Toledo Mud Hens (6 G, .450/.607/1.250/1.857, 9 H, 4 2B, 4 HR, 5 RBI, 10 R, 7 BB)
International League Player of the Week!
You have to wonder how much longer the Tigers can keep Malloy down. His numbers on the year are impressive (.293/.431/.510, 24 2B, 23 HR, 81 RBI, 86 R) and with Colt Keith getting more time at 2B it looks like 3B is his for the taking. Malloy controls the strike zone well as evident by his 8.8% SwStr and 18.3% BB rates. There is a lot to get excited about here.

Honorable Mentions:
Jonny Deluca, OF (Dodgers #14)
Oklahoma City Dodgers (5 G, .412/.545/1.059/1.604, 7 H, 3 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 6 R, 5 BB)
Weston Wilson, 3B (Phillies NR)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs (5 G, .474/.583/1.263/1.846, 9 H, 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 10 R, 5 BB, 2 SB)
Jhonkensy Noel, CI (Guardians #29)
Columbus Clippers (4 G, .474/.524/.947/1.471, 9 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 7 R, BB)
Curtis Mead, 2B (Rays #4)
Durham Bulls (6 G, .381/.458/.952/1.410, 8 H, 3 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 5 R, 2 BB, SB)
Heliot Ramos, OF (Giants #27)
Sacramento River Cats (5 G, .444/.583/1.056/1.639, 8 H, 2 2B, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 5 R, 6 BB)

PITCHER: Michael McGreevy, RHP (Cardinals #6)
Memphis Redbirds (1 GS, 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 9 K)
In his previous starts at the Triple-A level, McGreevy has found bats harder to miss and subsequently his homerun rate has climbed a bit. Last week’s start was a total different story. After allowing a homerun in six of his last seven games, he limited a tough Gwinnett lineup to just two singles in his 6.2 innings. He looks like a big league pitcher to me, but his low strikeout totals could limit his dynasty league upside.

Honorable Mentions:
Connor Phillips, RHP (Reds #13)
Louisville Bats (1 GS, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K)
Will Warren, RHP (Yankees #16)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (1 GS, 6 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K)
Gavin Stone, RHP (Dodgers #9)

Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week!
Chase Solesky, RHP (White Sox NR)
Charlotte Knights (1 GS, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K)

Double-A

HITTER: Deyvison de los Santos, 3B (Diamondbacks #15)
Amarillo Sod Poodles (6 G, .520/.520/1.080/1.600, 13 H, 3 2B, 3B 3 HR, 6 RBI, 7 R)
Amarillo 3B Deyvison de los Santos was on fire this week 7 runs 13 hits with 3 Home runs. Finishing the season up strong… (@blacksox96)

Honorable Mentions:
Junior Caminero, SS (Rays #1)
Montgomery Biscuits (6 G, .409/.536/1.045/1.581, 9 H, 3B, 4 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R, 5 BB)

Will Robertson, OF (Blue Jays #47)

Jackson Chourio, OF (Brewers #1)
Biloxi Shuckers (6 G, .320/.393/.600/.993, 8 H, 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 6 R, 3 BB, 3 SB)

PITCHER: Alan Rangel, RHP (Braves #44)
Mississippi Braves (1 GS, 7 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 12 K)
Southern League Pitcher of the Week!
A career minor leaguer, it would be nice to see the Braves give Rangel a cup of coffee in the bigs. He’s had a season to forget though in 2023 with 15 losses to his name. That didn’t stop him from absolutely dominating the Trash Pandas with 12 punch outs, no runs, and one hit over 7 innings. (@MKelley_ND)

Honorable Mentions:
Chad Dallas, RHP (Blue Jays #9)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats (1 GS, 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K)
Brett Kerry, RHP (Angels #40)
Rocket City Trash Pandas (1 GS, 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K)
Luis De Avila, LHP (Braves NR)
Mississippi Braves (1 GS, 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K)
Joander Suarez, RHP (Mets NR)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies (1 GS, 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 6 K)
Eastern League Pitcher of the Week!
Matt Sauer, RHP (Yankees #36)
Somerset Patriots (1 GS, 6.2 IP, 3 H, R, 0 BB, 11 K)

High-A

HITTER: Wyatt Langford, OF (Rangers #2)
Hickory Crawdads (4 G, .412/.444/.882/1.326, 7 H, 2 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 6 R, BB, SB)
South Atlantic League Player of the Week!
The 4th pick in the 2023 draft out of the University of Florida has started off his career in admirable fashion. After only 3 games in the ACL he was moved to High-A Hickory and he responded with a 1.097 OPS resulting in a call-up to AA Frisco. He’s headed to being a top 10 MLB prospect if he’s not already there. (@byrontx)

Honorable Mentions:
Emmanuel Rodriguez, OF (Twins #2)
Cedar Rapids Kernels (4 G, .389/.450/.944/1.394, 7 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, HR, 2 RBI, 5 R, 2 BB)
Cole Young, SS (Mariners #2)
Everett AquaSox (6 G, .478/.536/.696/1.232, 11 H, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 5 R, 3 BB)
Alexander Ramirez, OF (Angels #44)
Tri-City Dust Devils (6 G, .462/.462/.692/1.154, 12 H, 3 2B, HR, 5 RBI, 5 R, 3 SB)
Brock Wilken, 3B (Brewers #9)
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (6 G, .400/.464/.640/1.104, 10 H, 3 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 5 R, 3 BB, SB)
Gage Workman, SS (Tigers #32)
West Michigan Whitecaps (6 G, .400/.400/.700/1.100, 12 H, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 9 R, SB)

CO-PITCHERS:
Connor McCullough, RHP (White Sox NR)
Winston-Salem Dash (1 GS, 6 IP, H, 0 R, BB, 8 K)
Juan Carela, RHP (White Sox NR)
Winston-Salem Dash (1 GS, 7 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K)

These two Dash pitchers made life tough on Rome hitters last week. Thursday night McCullough took to the mound and flirted with a no-hitter. After a two out walk in the first inning, he set down the next thirteen straight hitters. A lead off bloop single in the sixth ruined the no-hit bid, but McCullough wasted no time retiring the next three batters to finish his night. Two days later Carela spun his own gem, sitting down the Braves in order the first time through the lineup, punching out six batters across the first three innings. He allowed his only hit of them game in the fourth and got out of a runners on the corner jam in the seventh before turning things over to the pen.

Honorable Mentions:
Mitch Neunborn, RHP (Phillies NR)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws (1 GS, 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 10 K)
South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week!

Zach Penrod, LHP (Red Sox NR)
Greenville Drive (1 GS, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K)
Victor Lizarraga, RHP (Padres #12)
Fort Wayne TinCaps (1 GS, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K)
Midwest League Pitcher of the Week!

Single-A

HITTER: Will Simpson, OF (Athletics NR)
Stockton Ports (6 G, .538/.556/.846/1.402, 14 H, 5 2B, HR, 8 RBI, 4 R, BB, 3 SB)
California League Player of the Week!
Simpson has wasted little time making an impact in pro ball. The A’s most recent 15th round pick out of Washington hit over .500 in the last week, homering once and driving in 8. The week continued a trend of steady offensive output for the outfielder as he brought his season slash line to up to .337/.381/.539. Simpson is coming off a solid senior campaign in the Pac-12 where he hit over .330 to go along with 18 homers. The 22 year old has been a late season bright spot for the Single-A Stockton in his 23 games. (@Leobaseball3)

Honorable Mentions:
Trevor Werner, 3B (Royals NR)
Columbia Fireflies (6 G, .429/.556/.857/1.413, 9 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 10 R, 2 BB, 7 SB)
Carolina League Player of the Week!
Thayron Liranzo, C/1B (Dodgers #21)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (5 G, .421/.522/.842/1.364, 8 H, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 4 R, 4 BB)
Walker Jenkins, OF (Twins #5)
Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (4 G, .529/.556/.882/1.438, 9 H, 2B, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, 4 R, BB, SB)
Florida State League Player of the Week!
Want to learn more about the “potential five-category player” Jenkins, I highly recommend checking out @sportz_nutt51‘s recent article on him.

Brayden Taylor, 3B (Rays #5)
Charleston RiverDogs (4 G, .333/.333/.833/1.166, 6 H, 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 3 R, 3 SB)
Mac Horvath, 2B/OF (Orioles #26)
Delmarva Shorebirds (5 G, .421/.542/.421/.963, 8 H, 6 R, 5 BB, 7 SB)

PITCHER: Douglas Orellana, RHP (Mets NR)
St. Lucie Mets (1 GS, 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 8 K)
Orellana was locked into a pitching dual last Saturday with Sean Hermann below. For his part Orellana allowed only single baserunners in the 1st, 6th, and 7th innings while striking out 8 Tarpons. This season he has racked up good strikeout numbers (104K in 85.1 IP), but is also walking 5 per 9 which has led to an up and down season. If he can limit the walks, like he did this week, he could be effective.

Honorable Mentions:
Sean Hermann, RHP (Yankees #31)
Tampa Tarpons (1 GS, 8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K)
Luke Young, RHP (Nationals NR)
Fredericksburg  Nationals (1 GS, 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K)
Carolina League Pitcher of the Week!

Darren Bowen, RHP (Mariners #42)
Modesto Nuts (1 GS, 6 IP, H, 0 ER, BB, 8 K)
Mason Pelio, RHP (Reds NR)
Daytona Tortugas (1 GS, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 7 K)
Kendry Rojas, LHP (Blue Jays #31)
Dunedin Blue Jays (1 GS, 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K)
Florida State League Pitcher of the Week!
