I like to look ahead at who could be blocking a prospect&#8217;s opportunity for promotion, whether it&#8217;s in the big leagues or in a different level within the minor league system. I think it&#8217;s important to do because it gives perspective into some long term thinking from the side of management as to when a player&#8217;s major league playing time could realistically begin. With that in mind I thought I&#8217;d look at the Minnesota <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> and give some early projections into playing time going into next season.<\/p>\n<div class=\"s2nPlayer k-8WQqdiDBXd-651409-9000\" data-type=\"float\"><\/div>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.sendtonews.com\/player3\/embedcode.js?SC=8WQqdiDBXd-651409-9000&#038;offsetx=0&#038;offsety=0&#038;floatwidth=400&#038;floatposition=bottom-right\" data-type=\"s2nScript\"><\/script><br \/>\nCatcher:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/garvemi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Mitch Garver<\/a>: #1 catcher<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/castrja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jason Castro<\/a>: Free Agent<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/astudwi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Willians Astudillo<\/a>: Bench<\/p>\n<p>What this means: Castro will probably go elsewhere, meaning there could be a competition for the backup spot. That said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=jeffer000rya&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Jeffers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=rortve000ben&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ben Rortvedt<\/a> are both not ready for a big league promotion.<\/p>\n<p>First Base:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/croncj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">C.J. Cron<\/a>: Third year arbitration<\/p>\n<p>What this means: The <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> have some decisions to make here at 1B. Do they move Sano over to 1B and let Cron walk? Do they sign a UFA? I believe their long term plan is to test <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=kirill000ale&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Alex Kirilloff<\/a> at 1B to start 2020 in the minors and see how that goes. If he adjusts nicely, they can ease him into that role for the second half of 2020. Having 1B eligibility is a nice bonus to have for Kirilloff owners.<\/p>\n<p>Second Base:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schoojo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Schoop<\/a>: Free Agent<\/p>\n<p>What this means: There&#8217;s no guarantee that Schoop comes back. If he does, he will likely start the year at 2B. Having that probably means that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arraelu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Luis Arraez<\/a> continues his role of shuffling himself around a few positions, all while leading off. One situation that could arise is giving Arraez the full-time gig, utilizing someone like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonzama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Marwin Gonzalez<\/a> as well to play everywhere, and then giving someone like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=gordon000nic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Nick Gordon<\/a> a shot to sit on the bench and get some opportunities. However, this is a small chance situation in my opinion, as Gordon, despite making progress, is losing time and chances to prove his worth.<\/p>\n<p>Shortstop:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/polanjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jorge Polanco<\/a>: Starting SS<\/p>\n<p>What this means: After the amazing season Polanco had as their starting shortstop, there&#8217;s no need for the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> to rush anyone up to the big leagues. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=lewis-002roy&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Royce Lewis<\/a> is your next in line for 2021, at the earliest.<\/p>\n<p>Third Base:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sanomi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Miguel Sano<\/a>: Second year arbitration<\/p>\n<p>Sano seemed to right the ship after a deep demotion to get things to where they should be. As I mentioned above, the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> have a big decision to make about their infield this season that could have minor league ramifications. There are no impactful corner infield minor league bats ready to help the Minnesota <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Outfield:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/buxtoby01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Byron Buxton<\/a>: Starting CF<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/keplema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Max Kepler<\/a>: Starting RF<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosared01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Eddie Rosario<\/a>: Starting LF<\/p>\n<p>What this means: The starting OF is all but set in stone. Nobody there is fearful of losing their jobs. However, the reserves are not close to being set. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wadela01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">LaMonte Wade Jr<\/a> played better than his stats would indicate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=milleia01,miller001ian&amp;search=Ian+Miller&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ian Miller<\/a> is no guarantee to make the big league club and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lamarry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ryan LaMarre<\/a> probably finds himself on another team. That means either free agency or a look to their minor league system, which is ripe with players ready to go. If Kirilloff doesn&#8217;t end up at 1B, look for him to get the call after a month or so. You know my feelings on him, he&#8217;s a top prospect ready to impress. Keep an eye on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=rooker000bre&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Brent Rooker<\/a> too, who has some pop in his bat. Finally a dark horse would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=raley-000luc&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Luke Raley<\/a>, but he&#8217;s not as talented as the ones stated above. Any of those could speed up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=blanke002tra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Travis Blankenhorn<\/a> promotion to AAA.<\/p>\n<p>Designated Hitter:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=cruzne02,cruzne01&amp;search=Nelson+Cruz&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Nelson Cruz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What this means: Like a fine wine&#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>Rotation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/berrijo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jose Berrios<\/a>: SP1<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gibsoky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Gibson<\/a>: Free Agent<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/perezma02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Martin Perez<\/a>: Team Option in 2020<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pinedmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Michael Pineda<\/a>: Suspended<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smeltde01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Devin Smeltzer<\/a>: SP4<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gratebr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Brusdar Graterol<\/a>: SP???<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dobnara01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Randy Dobnak<\/a>: SP???<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/odorija01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jake Odorizzi<\/a>: Free Agent<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/poppese01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Sean Poppen<\/a>: Injury to end year<\/p>\n<p>What this means: As you can see by the many names above, the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> altered their starting rotation many times and went with a lot of names. It&#8217;ll depend on how the Twins feel after being dominated again by the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/new-york-yankees\" title=\"Yankees\">Yankees<\/a>. Do they look at this year as a stepping stone and be happy with their progress, keeping things status quo? Or do they feel like they need to make a major move to change the end result? Berrios is a lock to start. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/odorija01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jake Odorizzi<\/a> had a career year and will look to be paid. Since the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> are probably OUT on big name free agent pitchers, Odorizzi will likely stay. Smeltzer did well upon his call up, as did Dobnak. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/perezma02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Martin Perez<\/a>, after his suspension, will probably have to find a new home. I could see the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> moving on from Gibson too. My prospective fantasy perspective is to keep an eye on the final two spots in the rotation. Dobnak, Graterol and Smeltzer will likely be fighting for 1-2 spots combined. However, the takeaway from this should be that all 3 have back end rotation potential for 2020. Finally, closely monitor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonsast01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Gonsalves<\/a> as he returns from a major injury in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Bullpen:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duffety01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Duffey<\/a>: Arbitration eligible<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/litteza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Zack Littell<\/a>: Bullpen<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maytr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Trevor May<\/a>: Bullpen<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rogerta01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Taylor Rogers<\/a>: Second year arbitration, closer<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/romose01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Sergio Romo<\/a>: Free agent<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stashco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Cody Stashak<\/a>: Bullpen<\/p>\n<p>What this means: Do they stick with what they have and make minor additions? Do they go after another closer who is a righty instead of Rogers? I think the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> stick with what worked for them. Their bullpen was solid for most of the season. I could see the \u201closers\u201d of the Dobnak\/Graterol\/Smeltzer SP trio getting time to pitch in the bullpen, but there doesn&#8217;t seem to be many changes on the horizon. Romo was a half year piece for them that can be replaced. Watch for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/romerfe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Fernando Romero<\/a> to put things together and get a legitimate shot. Another round of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thorple01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Lewis Thorpe<\/a> at Rochester could elevate his stock going forward too.<\/p>\n<p>I realize that it is early in the game to fully predict the changes that the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prospects1500.com\/minnesota-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Twins\">Twins<\/a> might make, but it&#8217;s fun and informative to speculate on what could happen, all while keeping an eye on minor league promotions and moves.
