Prospects of the Week: July 5 – July 11

Each week during the Minor League Baseball season we pick the hitting and pitching prospects from each level (Triple-A, Double-A, High-A, and Low-A) who, in our opinion, had the best week. Jake Berry and Scott Greene award their Prospects of the Week hitters and pitchers for each level, while also presenting other names at each level that are just as deserving of POTW honors. Jake has this week off, so if you agree or disagree with any of these prospects of the week, let Scott know! Feel free to reply in the comments with any player who deserves to be mentioned that may not have made our cut.

As always, tweet us (@Prospects1500@BerrysBraves, and @Scotty_Ballgame) when you see a great performance that warrants consideration for Prospect of the Week. Enjoy, and make sure you’re keeping an eye out for these prospects in your dynasty leagues.

Triple-A

HITTER: Cody Thomas, OF (Los Angeles Dodgers #26 prior to trade to Oakland)
Las Vegas Aviators (5 G, .417/.440/.917, 10 H, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R)
The Las Vegas Aviators have gotten a lot of offensive production from guys over the age of 25 so far this year and last week was no exception. Cody Thomas, the former Dodgers prospect, slugged his way to POTW honors thanks to his three homers and nine total extra base hits.

Honorable Mention:
Joe McCarthy, OF/1B (San Francisco Giants NR)
Sacramento River Cats (4 G, .500/.588/1.357, 7 H, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 3 BB

PITCHER: Joe Ryan, RHP (Tampa Bay Rays #14)
Durham Bulls (W, 7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K)
Allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine is a good way to earn a spot on the POTW list. That is what Ryan did last week after frustrating Norfolk hitters and picking up the win.

Honorable Mention:
Braxton Garrett, LHP (Miami Marlins #11)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (2 GS, W, 12.1 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 12 K)

Double-A

HITTER: Luis Aviles, UT (Los Angeles Angels NR)
Rocket City Trash Pandas (5 G, .400/.520/1.400, 8 H, 2 2B, 6 HR, 11 RBI, 7 R, 4 BB, SB)
That is not a typo. That is six dingers in five games for Aviles last week and a streak that saw him homer in four straight games.

Honorable Mention:
Dairon Blanco, OF(Kansas City Royals NS)
Northwest Arkansas Naturals (6 G, .423/.464/.692, 11 H, 4 SB, 2 HR)

PITCHER: Drew Parrish, LHP (Kansas City Royals NR)
Northwest Arkansas Naturals (1 GS, 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K)
Parrish set his own Double-A strikeout season high with this 9 K performance and it all came while shutting out Wichita over seven frames. The lefty generated 16 swinging strikes in his longest outing of the year.

Honorable Mentions:
Kutter Crawford, RHP (Boston Red Sox NR)
Portland Sea Dogs (1 GS, W, 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 10 K)

High-A

HITTER: Josh Breaux, C (New York Yankees #29)
Hudson Valley Renegades (5 G, .526/.550/1.421, 10 H, 2 2B, 5 HR,8 RBI, 7 R)
Breaux is known for his extremely aggressive approach at the plate and this is a great example of how that approach can pay off. Breaux slugged 1.421 while tying for the High-A lead in homers.

Honorable Mention:
Logan O’Hoppe, C (Philadelphia Phillies #32)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws (7 G, .444/.467/.778, 12 H, 3 HR, 10 RBI)

PITCHER: Derek Casey, RHP (Chicago Cubs NR)
South Bend Cubs (1 GS, W, 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K)
Casey’s stuff was on point in his outing last week. Not only is the 10 K’s evidence of that, so was his season high 20 swinging strikes.

Honorable Mentions:
Justin Slaten, RHP (Texas Rangers #52)
Hickory Crawdads (1 GS, 1 W, 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K)

Low-A

HITTER: Jose Acuna SS (Texas Rangers #12)
Down East Wood Ducks (6 G, .435/.500/.739, 10 H, 1 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R, 4 BB, 3 SB)
It was a pretty impressive stat line from Acuna as he aimed to mirror his brother’s style of play with a couple of long balls and a few stolen bases all in the same week.

Honorable Mentions:
Jose Rodriguez, INF (Chicago White Sox #25)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (6 G, .370/.414/.630, 10 H, 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 6 R, 4 SB)

PITCHER: Bryce Bonnin, RHP (Cincinnati Reds #25)
Columbia Fireflies (W, 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K)
Perhaps the most impressive pitching performance of the week, Bonnin was perfect in his Single-A debut facing the minimum while striking out 11 of the 15 hitters he faced.

Honorable Mention:
Marlin Willis, LHP (Kansas City Royals NR)
Columbia Fireflies (2 G, SV, 5.1IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K)

Rookie

HITTER: Jesus Chirinos, 1B (Milwaukee Brewers NR)
ACL Brewers Blue and ACL Brewers Gold (5 G, .471/.550/1.294, 8 H, 3B, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 3 BB)
Chirinos was crushing baseballs out in Arizona and led Rookie ball in homers. He even switched team midweek from the Blue team to the Gold team took the Blue team yard in the last game of the week. He was hitting everybody!

Honorable Mention:
Jonatan Clase, OF (Seattle Mariners #16)
ACL Mariners (4 G, .267/.453/.533, 4 H, 2B, HR, 7 SB)

PITCHER: Connor Sechler, LHP (Minnesota Twins NR)
ACL Rangers (2 G, 3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K)
Sechler only pitched three innings in relief over two games, but he was lights out in the small sample size. Most notably, the 22 year old produced a 78% swinging strike rate.

Honorable Mention:

Connor Loeprich, RHP (Baltimore Orioles NR)
FCL Orioles Orange (2 G, 9 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K)

I reside in Carrollton, Georgia and love everything baseball. I graduated from the University of West Georgia with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management. I have a passion for the minor leagues and have high hopes of visiting as many minor league parks as I can. I enjoy the statistical side of the game, especially sabermetrics. I am also an avid baseball card collector and fantasy baseball player.
