Finally, it has happened.  JT Realmuto finally has been dealt and he has been dealt inside the NL East.   What was the haul?

Marlins send Realumuto for Sixto Sanchez, Jorge Alfaro, Will Stewart and $250k International bonus money!

    Last Year’s Rank: 1
    Stats: 46 2/3 IP, 2.51 ERA, 45 K, 1.07 WHIP
    Ended the year on the disabled list and missed the Arizona Fall League due to the injury. He has the potential to be an Ace or SP3 in the near future. ETA: 2020

At Prospects1500 he is ranked as a Tier 1 player meaning:  Players with high expectations of both making the majors and playing at an All-Star level for a number of years.

Jorge Alfaro–25 years old, not arbitration eligible until 2021, and not projected to hit free agency until 2024–had a successful season last year for the Phillies.  He increased all his stats across the board including 344 at bats.  He hit .262 with a .324 OBP and a .407 slug.  He slugged 28 extra base hits, 10 home runs, totaling 140 total bases in 2018.  I think he was critical in the trade as he can step right into the catcher’s spot and while there will be a drop off from Realmuto it will be manageable having a seasoned player who is capable of producing.

Will Stewart, a 20th round selection in the 2015 draft, has started coming into his own last season.  He amassed 113.2 innings through 20 starts with 90 strike outs, a 2.06 ERA and a sub-one WHIP (.98).  He held opposing hitters to a .218 average and only issued 21 free passes in his first season with the Lakewood BlueClaws.    Check out this link from Matt Winkelman regarding his thoughts on Will:


He mentions the upside being a 4th starter which would be a great get for a 3rd piece of the trade for Realmuto.

Analysis:   I think that the Marlins hands were tied and Realmuto had to be dealt and getting Sixto Sanchez is the key.  They gave up, arguably, the best catcher in baseball but they are acquiring exacting what a team rebuilding needs to be acquiring: A future ACE!  I agree with Tony’s projection of ACE ceiling and 3rd starter floor which makes him close to a can’t miss prospect and Sixto’s future park is much more favorable to pitchers than his last future destination.  Then you add Alfaro to the mix to help bridge the gap until hopefully you can develop the “next” guy, be at Banfield or someone else, which is a huge get for a financially conscious team like the Marlins.  The last player involved in the deal is a pitcher that took some time to develop but looks to be a back half of the rotation guy or someone that could be turned into a useful pen arm.  The icing on the cake is the additional $250K International bonus money which will further go into overhauling the minor league system.  I give the Marlins an A on this deal!  From the Phillies side, does this mean something bigger is coming??   Joe Giglio thinks so read his thoughts here:
