The 2021 MLB Draft rankings have seen as much fluctuation as any season in recent memory. Coming into the season, Kumar Rocker was nearing the consensus at the top of the draft, but now you will be hard-pressed to see him as the top pitcher on his college staff, as Jack Leiter has surpassed him everywhere you look.
The Pirates at the top of the draft seem set on drafting a prep shortstop, but will that be Jordan Lawlar out of Texas, Marcelo Mayer out of California, or are we going to see a surprise name at the top?
Scouts are comparing this draft to the 2016 Draft where the top of the draft lacks a can’t miss prospect, but the depth of the draft provides plenty of value. The highest selected pick in 2016 to have made an All-Star team thus far is Bryan Reynolds at pick 59, while power-hitting Pete Alonso also went in the second round and reigning Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber slipped to the fourth round.
This list is perfectly balanced with five high schoolers making the top ten and five collegiate names. Keep an eye out for the college contributors who slide in the draft, and on this list, like Kevin Kopps, recipient of the Dick Howser Trophy as the best collegiate player this season, who sits all the way down at 247. Josh Hartle is on the list despite stating he is going to attend Wake Forest, but this is a list of draft-eligible players, not necessarily a list of the order they will/should be selected.
