Prospects1500’s 2021 #2EarlyMiLBMock Draft: Part II (Rounds 11-30)

Graphic design by John Stewart, @jonance on Twitter

We are pleased to present Part II (Rounds 11-30) of the round-by-round writeup covering the 3rd Annual #2EarlyMiLBMock. Make sure to check on Part I which spotlights the first 10 rounds. We apologize for the delay on this writeup as our Top 50 month drew our entire staff’s attention!

The MiLB Mock format had each of our writers drafting a 30-player roster. We use standard 5×5 fantasy baseball categories with the following positions: 2 C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, 5 OF, 2 UTIL, 10 P and 5 bench players. You can see every pick of the draft through the Google Draft Spreadsheet, which stayed open live during the draft, and will stay open to the public through the offseason and beyond for your reference.

This is Part 2 and covers Rounds 11-30 of this year’s #2EarlyMiLBMock. Below, you’ll hear the words of each manager analyzing their picks. Make sure to check on Part I which spotlights the first 10 rounds.

Please give each of these talented writers a follow on Twitter and find their prospect work on the Prospects1500 website.

David Gasper on Helium Watch Prospect Adrian Morejon:Morejon is going to be a key piece of the Padres rotation in 2021, especially with Mike Clevinger out for the year. He’s always had the stuff to succeed with a strong 3 pitch mix. He’s only going to be 22 next season, and his future is bright.”

Ben Wilson on Kendall Williams: “The Dodgers got their hands on a high upside pitching prospect by dealing a spare piece in Ross Stripling to Toronto. Williams has a high ceiling as a starting pitcher, and the arrow is pointing firmly upwards with a move to the Dodgers development machine. He’s a big breakout candidate in 2021.”

260 Gabriel Moreno, TOR C 13 20 @jacob_swain3

Michael Parnell on Can’t Miss prospect Slade Cecconi: “He has a plus fastball, above average slider and developing curveball. At the very least, he will be a formidable reliever. At best, a formidable starter.”

Daniel Victor on Sleeper prospect Benyamin Bailey: “was a mildly regarded prospect when he was signed out of the Panama for a meager $35K bonus. However, he turned heads in the 2019 Dominican Summer League and was named one of the top prospects in the circuit. In spite of his size 6’5″ 220 he is said to possess athleticism and a good understanding of the strike zone. He should begin unleashing some of his massive power potential in 2021. Some members of the White Sox front office have given him comps to his countryman Carlos Lee.”

Paul Woodin on Can’t miss prospect Luis Frias: “I love his arsenal of a mid-to-upper 90s fastball, spike curveball and a split-changeup.”

Jared Chapman on Jerar Encarnacion: “One of my favorite prospects. I love his power potential and the arm profiles in right field. Besides, he has to pan out…I have him on every one of my dynasty teams!”

279 Jonatan Clase, SEA OF 14 19 @Isaiah__Burrows
280 Gavin Sheets, CHW 1B 14 20 @RyanJames5

Daniel Victor on Best value prospect Austin Beck: “This kid once elicited Mike Trout comps. Yes, his rise through the minors hasn’t been meteoric, but the A’s are an intelligent organization and used a 6th overall pick to snag him in 2017. After being left off the expanded remote site roster Beck may have a bit of a chip on his shoulder and be ready to prove himself in 2021.”

Michael Parnell on Sleeper David Calabrese: “The Angels’ third-round pick in 2020 is an 18-year-old high schooler from Canada to dream on. A solid bat and plus plus speed. Check back in 4 years.”

299 Alexander Vargas, NYY SS 15 19 @CharlesTweed
300 Jeremy De La Rosa, WAS OF 15 20 @jacob_swain3

Jake Berry  on Best Value prospect Cole Wilcox: “Best value in the real MLB draft and best value in our #2EarlyMiLBMock. Wilcox is a first round talent who surprisingly fell in the 2020 draft and as a result fell in our mock. I’m a big fan of the running mid 90’s fastball coupled with a well developed change and power slider. There is a reason the Padres gave him first round money in the third round.”

David Gasper on Personal favorite Prospect Clayton Beeter: “Was getting buzz as a 1st round pick in the 2020 Draft, has a power curveball and shows 3 plus offerings. Putting him in the Dodgers player development system should maximize his potential.”

Paul Woodin on Deep Sleeper Parker Meadows: “20/20 potential. His speed on the bases and in the field make him a valuable asset. Meadows also has the size for good power potential.”

Jared Chapman on James Kaprielian: “Coming out of college Kaprielian looked like an ace in the making until Tommy John surgery derailed his progress. After a solid comeback season in 2019 he could be a rotation candidate in Oakland very soon.”

319 Nick Pratto, KCR 1B 16 19 @Isaiah__Burrows
320 Reggie Lawson, SDP RHP 16 20 @RyanJames5

James Zele on Best Value prospect Jasseel De La Cruz: “De La Cruz had a breakout 2019 season, jumping from Low-A to AA in his second full season. His three-pitch offering and improving control likely have him headed to the middle of Atlanta’s rotation in 2022. Adding him to my roster in the 16th round (311 overall) is easily my best value of the draft.”

Ryan James on Reggie Lawson: “A tall very athletic pitcher, Lawson showed everyone what they’ve been waiting to see in the Arizona Fall League in 2019. He will look to build on that and bounce back from Tommy John surgery in 2021.”

339 Alex Santos, HOU RHP 17 19 @CharlesTweed
340 Josh Wolf, NYM RHP 17 20 @jacob_swain3

Michael Parnell on C.J. van Eyk as Best Value: “Drafted #42 overall by Toronto in 2020, he has a plus curveball, promising slider but inconsistent fastball. If he can hold his fastball velocity, he’s a mid-rotation starter.”

Scott Greene on Thad Ward: “Homer pick here? Maybe. But I do think Ward has as good a chance, if not better, than Mata and Groome to actually make the big leagues and have some modicum of success. 2021 will be an important year for him.”

360 Brewer Hicklen, KCR OF 18 20 @RyanJames5

Ben Wilson on Jonathan Stiever: “Stiever is a nice deep league SP target who made his MLB debut for the White Sox in 2020, an impressive accomplishment for the 5th rounder in 2018. Stiever has a four pitch mix with a repeatable delivery, and could split time up and down for the White Sox again this season.”

Jared Chapman on J.B. Bukauskus: “I had the privilege of watching Bukauskus pitch at North Carolina and I can confirm that the slider is dirty. I like him as a future closer, but he could still make it as a starter if things fall his way.”

David Gasper on Sleeper prospect Coby Mayo:”Mayo has plenty of power, and if he’s able to improve his plate discipline he could be a stud. He’s got some development ahead of him, but the power is real and he’s someone to keep an eye on.”

Daniel Victor on Can’t miss prospect Steele Walker: “It’s hard to call anyone taken this late in this type of draft a “can’t miss” but Steele Walker is an exciting player to watch. The sweet swinging left-hander oozes swagger. When the Rangers traded Omar Mazara to the White Sox for Walker during the 2019 off-season they finally had their man. The Ranger’s brass was thrilled to land the outfielder who they coveted and were planning on taking with their second round pick in the 2018 draft. Now he returns to his home state to continue to develop with his sights set on Globe Life Field. This should be a perfect set of circumstances for “Walker Texas Ranger” to thrive.”

419 Lenny Torres, CLE RHP 21 19 @CharlesTweed
420 Luken Baker, STL 1B 21 20 @jacob_swain3

Daniel Victor on Deep sleeper Dominic Fletcher: “Dominic Fletcher has baseball DNA in his blood as his brother David has started a rather successful MLB career with the Angels. Now little brother gets his shot after being drafted out of the University of Arkansas in the 2nd round of the 2019 draft. Known more for his glove, Dominic was touted as the best defensive outfielder in that draft. However, the early returns from A-ball suggest he has some offensive potential as well. The left-hander slashed .318/.389/.463 in 214 at bats for Kane County.”

Jared Chapman on Jeisson Rosario: “I’ve been a big fan of Rosario’s for a while now and the move to a thinner system in Boston is a boost to his prospect value. He’s got the ability to stay in center and the profile to grow into decent power numbers.”

David Gasper on Helium watch prospect Tristen Lutz: “Lutz has plenty of power, and reports from the alternate training site in 2020 indicate he’s improved in his contact making ability, which will help him maximize that power in games. He’s a rising kid that could have a future in that Milwaukee lineup sooner rather than later.”

Michael Parnell on Alika Williams: “Williams, a shortstop at Arizona State, is a classic Rays player. Good hit tool, speed, defense, versatility. Whether he’s a starting shortstop or utility infielder, he’s a Best Value at this pick.”

Ryan James on Jhailyn Ortiz: “The plus raw power is enough to make Ortiz more than worth a shot at this point. The contact problems have held him back a bit, but I don’t hesitate to take a shot on big power at this point. “

Paul Woodin on Can’t miss prospect Keoni Cavaco: “I love his athleticism and overall tool package. He has a chance to grow into some serious power, already owning plus raw pop. Cavaco is also plus runner which can translate to some stolen bases down the road.”

479 Kyle Harrison, SFG LHP 24 19 @Isaiah__Burrows
480 Alex Wells, BAL LHP 24 20 @RyanJames5

Jared Chapman on Franklin Perez: “If it hadn’t been for injuries, this young man would either be in the Tigers rotation or at the top of the prospect rankings. This pick could be incredible value, or it could be a sad commentary on what sometimes happens when a guy with big talent can’t stay healthy.”

Tony Bps on Thomas Szapucki: “Szapucki missed all of 2018 due to Tommy John Surgery but he pitched very well both before and after he returned in 2019. He was a part of New York’s 60 man player pool and was considered for promotion at one point this past season. At this point in the draft to get a potential 2-starter makes him my choice for Best Value for my team.”

Ryan James on Alex Wells: “Consistently underrated, Wells doesn’t throw hard and may be a little undersized, but the results tell a different story. With 4 solid pitches and plus control, Wells was added to the 40 man roster this off-season. He continues to look like a backend rotation piece, which is a steal at this point in a draft of this size.”

499 Adonis Medina, PHI RHP 25 19 @CharlesTweed
500 Josh Smith, NYY 2B 25 20 @jacob_swain3

David Gasper on Mickey Moniak: “Anytime you can get a former No. 1 overall pick in the 25th round, you might as well take a shot, right? Moniak may never reach the expectations placed on him as a 1.1 pick, but he’s still just 22 years old and there’s plenty of talent in there that a team could tap into.”

Paul Woodin on Best Value Anthony Volpe: “Above average tools in everything but power which should be average with development. Compact swing with above average bat speed to spray line drives all over the field.”

519 Trent Deveaux, LAA OF 26 19 @Isaiah__Burrows
520 Ronald Bolanos, KCR RHP 26 20 @RyanJames5

Jake Berry on Sleeper prospect Dasan Brown: “There is a lot of upside with Brown due to a highly athletic ceiling. He already has the tools to hit for average, but where he will really earn his paycheck will be on the basepaths. The Canadian has elite level speed and is still young enough that the rest of his raw tools have plenty of time to catch up.”

Tony Bps on Starlyn Castillo: “Castillo was one of the best pitchers available during the 2018 J2 signing period. He hasn’t pitched many innings since coming to the states but has a solid mid 90’s fastball and promising offspeed stuff.”

539 Junior Sanquintin, CLE SS 27 19 @CharlesTweed
540 Darell Hernaiz, BAL SS 27 20 @jacob_swain3

Ryan James on Jake Burger:”I can’t help but cheer for the 2017 1st round pick. Suffering through 3 leg surgeries in 2 years, Burger hasn’t played in a game since 2017, but expects to be healthy for 2021 and should finally get to show the plus power that could make him a valuable bat in the White Sox lineup in the not too distant future.”

Daniel Victor on Wander Javier:” Best value: Because @dustycolorado would have wanted it that way. Actually he would have demanded it that way and also demanded that Javier be named as “can’t miss” along with “biggest sleeper.”

James Zele on Sleeper prospect Brandon Lockridge: “Lockridge is a work in progress, but he has a high ceiling if he continues developing at the rate he has. He’s a lightning-fast outfielder who has found a home in center field. His swing mechanics and plate approach are still a work in progress, but Lockridge has shown improved power and average so far in his professional career. If he continues to improve at higher levels, he may be an absolute steal in the 27th round.”

Scott Greene on Deep Sleeper Yerry Rodriguez: “He’s definitely a pitcher in the Texas farm system you need to keep an eye on. Fangraphs loves him and piqued my interest.”

559 Trei Cruz, DET SS 28 19 @Isaiah__Burrows
560 Alfonso Rivas, CHC 1B 28 20 @RyanJames5

Paul Woodin on Deep Sleeper Eliezer Alfonzo: “He has decent pop that should result in doubles and balls into the gap. Alfonzo also possess a good eye at the plate and good bat to ball skills. He has a career minor league slash line of .316/.392/.379.”

Michael Parnell on Sleeper Caleb Sampen: “The Tampa Bay Rays know pitching, and Sampen is a pitcher with a full arsenal of good, not great, stuff but an unrivaled work ethic according to his catchers. Keep an eye on him.”

579 Alex Jackson, ATL C 29 19 @CharlesTweed
580 Darryl Collins, KCR OF 29 20 @jacob_swain3

Jared Chapman on Osleivis Basabe: “At this stage of the draft I’m looking for guys with high ceilings and Basabe fits the bill. He has the speed to develop into a plus base stealer and the potential to generate plus power as he grows into his frame.”

Scott Greene on Andres Gimenez: “Have to be honest. I think most of the drafting crew, including myself, forgot about Gimenez being eligible for this draft. Still less than 130 MLB at bats. He easily could have been a Top 100 pick in this mock.”

599 Justin Martinez, ARI RHP 30 19 @Isaiah__Burrows
600 Will Robertson, TOR OF 30 20 @RyanJames5

Paul Woodin on Best value Damon Jones: “His fastball touches 96 mph. Curveball is downright nasty and has evolved into a true out pitch also owns a slider/changeup that are both average pitches for the southpaw. Should be a middle rotation pitcher with potential for more.”

David Gasper on Personal Favorite pick Taylor Kohlwey: “I played with Taylor Kohlwey in college at UW-La Crosse. This kid can hit and he’s got some pop, too. He’s one of the best two strike hitters I, or any of our coaches had ever seen. He had a slow start in the minors but hit .302 across Double-A and Triple-A in 2019. He’s just about ready to push for a big league spot.”

Daniel Victor on stolen player alert Jordan Romano: “Where else can you get the odds-on favorite to be his team’s MLB closer in the 30th round of a draft?”

Michael Parnell on Can’t Miss prospect Christian Koss: “The Boston Red Sox just obtained him from the Colorado Rockies. They see what I see: a solid utility player who can play around the diamond for a big-league team.”
