Whew! The trade deadline sure was a whirlwind of excitement. Although it will be a few years before we can determine the true winners of prospect deals, let’s take a look at what impacts the deal made for these players. For more information on the players, click on the team name where they were traded from. The link will take you to our Top 50 for that team if the player was listed. All players are listed in alphabetical order below.


Riley Adams, C
Age: 25
Current Level: AAA
From: Toronto Blue Jays
To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: The deal works out better for Adams who was behind two or three other catchers in Toronto’s system. That being said, Washington acquired Keibert Ruiz shortly after this trade was announced.

Kevin Alcantara, OF
Age: 19
Current Level: Rookie
From: New York Yankees
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: Alcantara may be moved up quicker in Texas than with the perpetually contending Yankees who don’t always hand the reigns over to rookies and have a full outfield as is.

Ivan Armstrong, RHP
Age: 21
Current Level: Low-A
From: San Francisco Giants
To: Oakland Athletics
Trade Impact: Oakland has a better history than San Francisco in developing pitchers so this may help Armstrong’s development better.

Jordy Barley, SS
Age: 21
Current Level: Low-A
From: San Diego Padres
To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: San Diego is stacked with middle infielders so this could open a better path to the majors for Barley.

Peyton Battenfield, RHP
Age: 24
Current Level: AA
From: Tampa Bay Rays
To: Cleveland Guardians
Trade Impact: Both organizations develop pitching very well so negligible impact here.

Carter Bins, C
Age: 22
Current Level: AA
From: Seattle Mariners
To: Pittsburgh Pirates
Trade Impact: Bins was behind on Raleigh on Seattle’s depth chart so this trade gives him a closer shot at the majors.

Tyler Burch, RHP
Age: 23
Current Level: High-A
From: Philadelphia Phillies
To: Baltimore Orioles
Trade Impact: Burch probably gets a quicker opportunity in the Baltimore system as they are in the midst of a rebuild and could see what he can offer out of the bullpen.

Alexander Canario, OF
Age: 21
Current Level: Low-A
From: San Francisco Giants
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: Chicago looks ready to undergo another rebuild and this deal gives Canario a chance to be part of the future core.

Gerardo Carrillo, RHP
Age: 22
Current Level: AA
From: Los Angeles Dodgers
To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: Los Angeles does a much better job at developing pitching than Washington but he could have a better shot at the rotation with the Nationals.

Donovan Casey, OF
Age: 25
Current Level: AA
From: Los Angeles Dodgers
To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: Casey could have a better chance to the majors in Washington than in Los Angeles.

Hans Crouse, RHP
Age: 22
Current Level: AA
From: Texas Rangers
To: Philadelphia Phillies
Trade Impact: If the Phillies just let Crouse focus and develop as a starter, as opposed to their treatment of other prospects, he has a chance at joining the rotation possibly next year.

Pete Crow-Armstrong, OF

Current Level: Low-A
From: New York Mets
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: Crow-Armstrong, along with Canario and Brennen Davis, should give Chicago a formidable outfield for years to come.

Noah Davis, RHP

To: Colorado Rockies
Trade Impact: Anytime a pitcher goes from one organization to Colorado, it usually isn’t a good thing.

Bryan De La Cruz, OF

Current Level: Major Leagues

To: Miami Marlins
Trade Impact: The Marlins are struggling in their outfield and plugged De La Cruz right in there once acquiring him. This trade already led to more playing time for him.

Greg Deichmann, OF
Age: 26
Current Level: AAA
From: Oakland Athletics
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: Deichmann is older for a prospect but with Chicago not in contention, they should move him up to the majors quickly to test his bat against big league pitching.

Yainer Diaz, C
Age: 22
Current Level: A
From: Cleveland Guardians
To: Houston Astros
Trade Impact: Houston grabs a young, good-hitting catcher to join Korey Lee in a system that doesn’t have many options in the minors behind the plate.

Ezequiel Duran, 2B
Age: 22
Current Level: High-A
From: New York Yankees
To: Texas Rangers
Trade Impact: Duran should move quickly through the system, perhaps quicker than he would have in New York.

Matt Dyer, C/1B/OF
Age: 23
Current Level: Low-A
From: New York Mets
To: Tampa Bay Rays
Trade Impact: The Rays enjoy their versatile players and Dyer should get a chance all over the diamond with Tampa as he develops.

Anderson Espinoza, RHP
Age: 23
Current Level: High-A
From: San Diego Padres
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: Chicago should be able to give Espinoza a better chance at the majors and should be more patient with him than San Diego would, given they aren’t in contention. Either way, I truly hope to see him succeed given all the adversity he’s faced during his career.

Josh Gessner, RHP
Age: 21
Current Level: Rookie
From: Philadelphia Phillies
To: Texas Rangers
Trade Impact: Negligible impact on Gessner since he’s still young and hasn’t played over Rookie ball yet.

Kevin Gowdy, RHP
Age: 23
Current Level: High-A
From: Philadelphia Phillies
To: Texas Rangers
Trade Impact: Gowdy should have a quicker path to the majors with Texas over Philadelphia. He’s already 23 and finally healthy.

Josiah Gray, RHP
Age: 23
Current Level: Major Leagues
From: Los Angeles Dodgers
To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: Los Angeles already gave Gray major league innings but, when healthy, their rotation didn’t have much room for him. He should get more opportunities to show his stuff in Washington, as they retool for next year.

Richard Guasch, RHP

Current Level: High-A
From: Oakland Athletics
To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: Negligible impact as he doesn’t project to be starting material but could get innings quicker in Washington’s bullpen.

Abrahan Gutierrez, C
Age: 21
Current Level: High-A
From: Philadelphia Phillies
To: Pittsburgh Pirates
Trade Impact: The Phillies dealt from strength since they have Realmuto locked up for years and other catching prospects ahead of Gutierrez in the minors. This deal could move his timeline for promotion sooner.

Trevor Hauver, 2B
Age: 22
Current Level: Low-A
From: New York Yankees
To: Texas Rangers
Trade Impact: Same as with Duran, Hauver could move quicker in Texas than in New York.

Bailey Horn, LHP
Age: 23
Current Level: High-A
From: Chicago White Sox
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: Horn could get to the majors quicker as part of a rebuilding squad.

Spencer Howard, RHP
Age: 25
Current Level: AAA
From: Philadelphia Phillies
To: Texas Rangers
Trade Impact: This trade could be a gigantic impact on Howard if Texas elects to stick to one plan for Howard and sees it through, for better or worse. Philadelphia swung Howard back and forth between starting and relieving and the majors and minors which is not good, especially for young players.

Cooper Hummel, C
Age: 26
Current Level: AAA
From: Milwaukee Brewers
To: Arizona Diamondbacks
Trade Impact: Hummel should get more opportunities behind the plate in Arizona possibly backing up Carson Kelly.

Janson Junk, RHP
Age: 25
Current Level: AA
From: New York Yankees
To: Los Angeles Angels
Trade Impact: Junk could play better in Los Angeles as they are desperate for serviceable pitching of any kind that can perform.

Kasey Kalich, RHP
Age: 23
Current Level: High-A
From: Atlanta Braves
To: Kansas City Royals
Trade Impact: Atlanta has a knack for developing pitching but Kansas City isn’t too bad either.

Caleb Kilian, RHP
Age: 24
Current Level: AA
From: San Francisco Giants
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: A much-improved Killian could move quickly in the Chicago system and get a chance to show his stuff in the big leagues soon.

Tucupita Marcano
Age: 21

Trade Impact: Marcano was blocked in San Diego by other middle infielders so going to a rebuilding Pittsburgh team could accelerate his ascension to the majors.

To: Los Angeles Angels
Trade Impact: See Janson Junk a few inches above.

Trade Impact: Martin should move quicker in the Minnesota system than in Toronto. He would have fit in well with the Blue Jays young lineup but Minnesota’s farm system is growing and getting better.

To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: No change in impact here as Milas was behind Murphy and Soderstrom in Oakland and is now behind Ruiz and Adams in Washington.

Michell Miliano, RHP

To: Pittsburgh Pirates
Trade Impact: Miliano could get to the majors quicker in Pittsburgh.

Braeden Ogle, LHP

To: Philadelphia Phillies
Trade Impact: Ogle celebrated his 24th birthday by moving across Pennsylvania from the Pirates to the Phillies and should get a change in Philadelphia’s bullpen before summer is out.

Reese Olson, RHP

To: Detroit Tigers
Trade Impact: Olson should get a better, quicker chance to the majors in a rebuilding Detroit system who have greatly improved in developing pitching the last few years.

Glenn Otto, RHP

To: Texas Rangers
Trade Impact: Otto’s wins probably take a hit going to the Rangers but this could provide a quicker path to the majors.

Hoy Park, OF

Trade Impact: Park should play sooner in Pittsburgh than in New York after this deal.

Trade Impact: See Jose Marte a few inches above and Janson Junk a few more inches above that.

Konnor Pilkington, LHP

Trade Impact: This deal bodes very well for Pilkington going to a Cleveland organization that does very well in developing pitching. He could be a sleeper in deeper leagues.

Daniel Placencia, RHP

From: Oakland Athletics
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: Placencia could get to the majors quicker in Chicago but Oakland has the better reputation for developing pitching.

Aldo Ramirez, RHP

To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: Ramirez could get to the majors quicker on the rebuilding Nationals instead of Boston.

Keibert Ruiz, C

Trade Impact: This trade really opens an opportunity for Ruiz, who’s blocked in Los Angeles by Will Smith.

Joe Ryan, RHP

Trade Impact: The Twins have a good history of developing pitching and it’s been bewildering why Ryan hasn’t been given a chance in Tampa yet. Minnesota should be giving him a chance soon if only to show their fans what they received when they moved the popular Nelson Cruz.

Alex Scherff, RHP

From: Boston Red Sox
To: Minnesota Twins
Trade Impact: Scherff goes to Minnesota where he could move up quickly as a hard-throwing reliever in their system.

From: Seattle Mariners
To: Tampa Bay Rays
Trade Impact: Shenton’s timeline to the majors should remain about the same with the Rays but their player development could kick his potential up a notch.

Seth Shuman, RHP
Age: 23

To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: Shuman should get to the majors sooner with Washington instead of Oakland but his impact shouldn’t be too big.

Evan Sisk, LHP
Age: 24
Current Level: AA
From: St. Louis Cardinals
To: Minnesota Twins
Trade Impact: Sisk goes from one team that does a solid job with developing pitching to another that does the same. He could move quicker in Minnesota’s system as a reliever.

Josh Smith, SS

From: New York Yankees
To: Texas Rangers
Trade Impact: Smith has a quicker opportunity to the majors with Texas over the Yankees.

Drew Strotman, RHP
Age: 24

Trade Impact: As written about Joe Ryan, Minnesota should give Strotman an opportunity soon as part of the Cruz trade.

Jack Suwinski, OF

To: Pittsburgh Pirates
Trade Impact: Same as with Marcano, Pittsburgh will want to see what they have in Suwinski to determine if he’s going to be part of the future.

Joaquin Tejada, RHP
Age: 18

To: Pittsburgh Pirates
Trade Impact: Tejeada is so young and far from the majors that the trade doesn’t have a big impact on him.

Mason Thompson, RHP
Age: 23
Current Level: AAA
From: San Diego Padres
To: Washington Nationals
Trade Impact: San Diego has more pitchers above Thompson in the minors so this trade could get him up sooner.

Alexander Vizcaino, RHP
Age: 24
Current Level: High-A
From: New York Yankees
To: Chicago Cubs
Trade Impact: The Yankees have so many similar, talented pitching in the minors that this deal gives Vizcaino a quicker path to the majors.

Case Williams, RHP

Trade Impact: This deal doesn’t have an impact on SWR’s development but could get him promoted sooner in Minnesota over Toronto.

Bonus Players:
Although these two players aren’t rookies, they are young and were moved at the deadline.

Abraham Toro, 3B
Current Level: Majors
Age: 24
From: Houston Astros
To: Seattle Mariners
Trade Impact: This trade opens a gigantic opportunity for Toro since he was blocked in Houston by Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve. He hit very well in the minors but never got settled in the majors.

Jesus Luzardo, LHP
Current Level: 23
Age: AAA
From: Oakland Athletics
To: Miami Marlins
Trade Impact: The move to Miami could actually help Luzardo greatly. Miami is collecting an army of young pitching talent and, in the National League, Luzardo won’t be facing a DH (yet) and is going to be facing more rebuilding teams in the NL East than he would in the AL West.
