2024 All-Star Futures Game Preview

The All-Star Futures Game is scheduled for Saturday, July 13th at 3:10pm CT at Globe Life Park in Texas as part of MLB’s All-Star Festivities. From the first game in 1999 until 2018, the United States faced off against the World’s prospects. That format changed in 2019 where the National League’s prospects square off against the American League’s. This game features most of the game’s top prospects where they can showcase their talents to a greater audience.

A new feature this year will be Futures Skills Showcase, where four players from each league will participate in three challenges – Hit it Here, Call Your Shot, Swing for the Fences.

Let’s take a look at the rosters broken down by position to see which team has the advantage. The first number next to the player is his ranking in our Overall Top 190 Prospects List from earlier this year. The second number is the player’s ranking on his team’s Top 50 List from January. Our updated midseason team Top 50s are due to be released later this month. Rosters are subject to change as we get closer to the game depending on promotions, injuries or other factors. For example, James Wood and Brooks Lee were recently promoted to Washington and Minnesota respectively and will likely be replaced by some of the inactives.

Catchers:

American League:
Samuel Basallo, BAL 16 / 2
Harry Ford, SEA 61 / 2
Kyle Teel, BOS 51 / 3
National League:
Drake Baldwin, ATL Unranked / 15
Thayron Liranzo, LAD Unranked / 14
Ethan Salas, SD 11 / 1

Advantage: American League
Salas has been struggling since being moved up to High-A, but he’s still only 18 years old. Liranzo and Baldwin have had solid seasons. However, Basallo and Ford have both been doing very well and Teel could potentially be promoted to the majors later this season.

Infielders:

American League:
Xavier Isaac, TB 37 / 3
Brooks Lee, MIN 36 / 3
Hao-Yu Lee, DET 184 / 9
Marcelo Mayer, BOS 19 / 2
Colson Montgomery, CWS 17 / 1
Ralphy Velazquez, CLE Unranked / 9
Sebastian Walcott, TEX 82 / 4
Cole Young, SEA 47 / 1
National League:
Cam Collier, CIN 96 / 7
Deyvison De Los Santos, ARI Unranked / 8 on CLE
Bryce Eldridge, SF 124 / 6
Termarr Johnson, PIT 49 / 2
Aidan Miller, PHI 95 / 4
Jeral Perez, LAD Unranked / 47
Cooper Pratt, MIL Unranked / 10
Matt Shaw, CHI 26 / 3

Advantage: National League
Isaac and Lee have both been very impressive this year and Detroit’s Lee has shown another level of power to his game. Mayer and Montgomery have turned it on after slow starts. De Los Santos has been a monster this season while Johnson has been struggling somewhat. Perez came out of nowhere to put up solid numbers and Pratt has looked impressive in his second year. Shaw looks very close to the major leagues but when all is said and done, Miller may be the best of this bunch, already putting up great numbers this season.

Outfielders:

American League:
Jaison Chourio, CLE 173 / 7
Max Clark, DET 24 / 2
Gavin Cross, KC 185 / 6
Spencer Jones, NYY 54 / 3
Chandler Simpson, TB Unranked / 12
National League:
Owen Caissie, CHI 57 / 5
Justin Crawford, PHI 80 / 2
Dylan Crews, WSH 6 / 1
Druw Jones, AZ 43 / 2
James Wood, WSH 13 / 2

Advantage: National League
Jackson’s little brother, Jaison, has been making a name for himself and Clark is yet another impressive Tiger. Cross has rebounded this season with some nice numbers while Jones has cooled off after a strong start. Simpson is another Ray who is moving up the lists, leading the world in stolen bases (58). Caissie is having a solid year while Crawford is hitting and stealing bases. Crews bounced back in a big way after a slight letdown last season and Wood is playing in the major leagues right now.

Pitchers:

American League:
A.J. Blubaugh, HOU Unranked / Unranked
Caden Dana, LAA Unranked / 3
Ben Kudrna, KC Unranked / 5
Luis Morales, OAK 189 / 7
Fernando Perez, TOR Unranked / 34
Winston Santos, TEX Unranked / 32
Noah Schultz, CWS 58 / 3
Brock Selvidge, NYY Unranked / 11
Emiliano Teodo, TEX Unranked / 22
National League:
Bubba Chandler, PIT 152 / 5
Chase Dollander, COL 161 / 4
Tink Hence, STL 65 / 3
Rhett Lowder, CIN 70 / 2
Quinn Mathews, STL Unranked / 28
Noble Meyer, MIA 83 / 1
Robby Snelling, SD 48 / 3
Brandon Sproat, NYM Unranked / 15
Thomas White, MIA Unranked / 3

Advantage: National League
Blubaugh is having a nice season but nothing spectacular. Dana and Kudrna have pitched very well but Morales hasn’t put up the best numbers this season but has potential. Santos has looked great for Texas while Schultz is putting up solid numbers for the White Sox. Chandler has been struggling this season but Dollander has looked great. Hence has improved even more after a solid 2023 and Lowder gives the Reds another young impressive pitcher. Meyer has been very good for Miami but Snelling is having a disappointing season. While White has been wild for Miami, Sproat gives the Mets yet another solid pitching prospect.

Futures Skills Showcase:

American League:
Roman Anthony, BOS 12 / 1
Tre’ Morgan, TB Unranked / 26
National League:
Moises Ballesteros, CHI 111 / 7
Brady House, WSH 34 / 3

Managers and Notable Coaches:

American League:
Adrian Beltre – Manager, Hall of Fame Inductee
Prince Fielder – Hitting coach
Mitch Moreland – 1st Base coach
Nelson Cruz – 3rd Base coach
Francisco Cordero – Pitching coach
Derek Holland – Bullpen coach
Elvis Andrus – Bench coach
Raul Ibanez – Coach
Kenny Holmberg – Minor League coach
Alex Rodriguez – Athletic coach

National League:
Michael Young – Manager
Mark Teixeira – Hitting coach
Gary Matthews Jr.- 1st Base coach
Gabe Alvarez – 3rd Base coach
Darren Oliver – Pitching coach
Colby Lewis – Bullpen coach
Ian Kinsler – Bench coach
Vernon Wells – Coach
Nate Brooks – Athletic coach

Advantage: American League
Both coaching staffs are filled with solid Texas Rangers of the past. Jose Canseco must have been busy that weekend not to be included on either coaching staff. All of the coaches were solid, professional major league players in their era who should provide great advice to their players. The advantage goes to the American League with having the Hall of Famer in Beltre and 6-time All Star in Fielder.

MVP Prediction:
Let’s go with Dylan Crews, the 2nd pick in last year’s draft. After seeing the first pick, Paul Skenes, dominate in the major leagues, Crews may be motivated to put all of his talents on display on the big stage.

Game Prediction:
While there are so many talented players on both sides, the National League looks more dominant especially on offense. I can see a high scoring game ending in a 10-8 victory for the National League.
