Each week during the Minor League Baseball season we pick the hitting and pitching prospects from each level (AAA, AA, A+, and A, then Short Season-A and Rookie league later in the summer) who, in our opinion, had the best week. We’re always on the lookout for candidates, so tweet us (@Prospects1500, @berrys_baseball and @Scotty_Ballgame) when you see a great performance.

Jake Berry and Scott Greene pick their Prospects of the Week hitters and pitchers for each level, while also presenting other names at each level that are just as deserving of POTW honors. Enjoy, and make sure you’re keeping an eye out for these prospects in your dynasty leagues.


Triple-A

Hitter: Mike Yastrzemski, OF (San Francisco Giants, NR)
Sacramento River Cats (.480/.567/1.000, 4 HR, 12 H, 4 SO, 4 BB, 1 SB)
It is times like these where I’m not sure how exactly to pursue the “prospects” of the week. Often times we have players who are no longer prospect eligible show out and deserve recognition, and then sometimes we get 28-year-old career minor leaguers who have a great week, but might not be “prospects” in the traditional sense of the word. The more I contemplated, the more I thought Yastrzemski deserved some recognition. While he is 28, facing competition nearly two years younger than him on average, has six years of pro ball and and an SEC career at Vandy under his belt, Yastrzemski’s week was still noteworthy. He homered four times over the course of his seven games while striking out just four times and equaling that number in walks. He added a double to the tally making five of his 12 hits go for extra bases.

Round Rock Express (.400/.464/.840, 10 H, 3 HR, 2 2B, 8 SO, 3 BB) – just another week at the office for Alvarez!

Jacob Wilson, 1B (Washington Nationals, NR)
Louisville Bats (.448/.515/.759, 13 H, 2 HR, 11 RBI 3 2B, 6 SO, 4 BB)

Pitcher: Devin Smeltzer, RHP (Minnesota Twins #36)
Rochester Red Wings (8 IP, 0 ER, 6 K, 1 BB, 4 H)
After an Honorable Mention last week, Smeltzer’s solid outing was good enough to earn him prospect of the week honors this week. Of course it helps that the competition was sparse, but that doesn’t take anything away from the 23-year-old’s performance. Smeltzer tossed eight innings of shutout ball against the Durham Bulls on Saturday. It was a very frustrating day for Bulls hitters as not only did they fail to cross the plate, they could only muster four hits and one walk against Smeltzer.

Double-A

Hitter: Bobby Dalbec (Boston Red Sox #2)
Portland Sea Dogs (.500/.556/1.438, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 1 3B, 1 2B, 1 SB, 2 SO, 1 BB)
The knock on big Bobby Dalbec has always been the swing and miss. While the plate approach wasn’t necessarily outstanding over the last week as evident by the one walk, the man struck out just twice in his 18 plate appearances while hitting four home runs. Throw in a double and triple for six extra base hits across four games, and you have your Double-A hitter of the week.

Osvaldo Duarte, 2B (Houston Astros #48)

Dalton Kelly, 1B/OF (Tampa Bay Rays #44)
Montgomery Biscuits (.588/.741/.941, 10 H, 3 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 7 BB)

Pitcher: Nabil Crismatt, RHP (Seattle Mariners, NR)
Arkansas Travelers (6 IP, W, 0 ER, 13 K, 0 BB, 3 H)
How about this dominant start from the Colombian right hander? After being demoted from Triple-A in mid April, Crismatt has performed well, but really got the fantasy community’s attention with his start last Thursday. The 24 year old tied a season high for innings, but threw fewer pitches in this outing than any of his other five this season and hit double digit strikeouts for the first time with 13.

High-A

Hitter: Zach Remillard, INF (Chicago White Sox, NR)
Winston-Salem Dash (.556/.619/.889, 1 HR, 1 3B, 1 2B, 10 H)
Remillard is riding a seven game hit streak and has multi-hit games in each of his last four contests. The 25-year-old utility man struck out five times to three walks in his impressive five game run last week and had three extra base hits to add to his line, one of each variety.

Nolan Jones, 3B (Cleveland Indians #1)
Lynchburg Hillcats (.625/.786/1.000, 1 3B, 1 2B, 5 H, 6 BB, 1 SO)

Pitcher: Kevin Smith, RHP (New York Mets, NR)
St. Lucie Mets (5.2 IP, 0 ER, 9 K, 2 BB, 4 H)
Smith got a season high 16 swinging strikes in his start against Charlotte last week which in turn led to a season high in strikeouts as well with nine. The Georgia native missed a lot of bats in his outing, but the majority of contact he did allow was in the air. Regardless of what the underlying stats may look like, Smith got the job done.

Inland Empire 66ers (2 GS, 9 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 8 BB (maybe not POTW worthy), 16 K (but definitely POTW worthy!))

Palm Beach Cardinals (6.1 IP, W, 11 K, 0 BB, 1 ER, 6 H)


Single-A

Hitter: Ian Dawkins, OF (Chicago White Sox, NR)
Kannapolis Intimidators (.556/.613/,778, 15 H, 1 HR, 3 2B, 6 RBI, 3 SO, 4 BB)
There are two Ian’s ranked in our White Sox top 50. However, Dawkins isn’t one of them. If he keeps this effort up, that may change come midseason update time. The 23-year-old led all of minor league baseball in hits last week with 15. Dawkins hit safely in each of his seven games, including a five hit performance against Lexington that featured a home run.

D.C. Arendas, 1B (Los Angeles Angels, NR)
Burlington Bees (.381/.480/1.000, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 8 H, 2 3B)

Pitcher: Yerry Rodriguez, RHP (Texas Rangers #31) & Scott Engler, RHP (Texas Rangers, NR)
Hickory Crawdads – Rodriguez (5 IP, 12 K, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 BB), Engler (6 IP, SV, 11 K, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB)
How about our first co-prospects of the week from the Hickory Crawdads as Yerry Rodriguez had a solid start and Scott Engler was a menace out of the pen. Engler tossed some high leverage innings including a couple of extra frames in one outing. Over the course of his three appearances last week, the 22 year old fanned five, three, and three proving to be equally impressive across the board. Rodriguez got a 31% swinging strike rate in his outing, the highest of any starter last week.
