Each week during the Minor League Baseball season we pick the hitting and pitching prospects from each level (AAA, AA, A+, and A, then Short Season-A and Rookie league later in the summer) who, in our opinion, had the best week. We’re always on the lookout for candidates, so tweet us (@Prospects1500, @berrys_baseball and @Scotty_Ballgame) when you see a great performance.

Jake Berry and Scott Greene pick their Prospects of the Week hitters and pitchers for each level, while also presenting other names at each level that are just as deserving of POTW honors. Enjoy, and make sure you’re keeping an eye out for these prospects in your dynasty leagues.


Triple-A

Hitter: Domingo Leyba, INF (Arizona Diamondbacks #45)
Reno Aces (.520/.571/1.200, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 6 2B, 1 3B, 1 SO, 2 BB)
What a week for Leyba. 10 extra base hits in his six games last week made him the second Reno Ace to get the honor in as many weeks. He hit safely in each game and had four multi-hit games.

Isan Diaz, 2B (Miami Marlins #7)
New Orleans Baby Cakes (.440/.563/1.120, 11 H, 2 2B, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 11 R)

Kyle Tucker, OF (Houston Astros #2)
Round Rock Express (.370/.485/.963, 5 HR, 8 RBI, 1 2B, 3 SO, 5 BB)

Pitcher: Elieser Hernandez, RHP (Miami Marlins, NR)
New Orleans Baby Cakes (6 IP, W, 0 ER, 12 K, 3 BB, 1 H)
Hernandez posted a dominant six innings in his outing against Oklahoma City on the 22nd and it was easily his best outing of the year. The righty allowed just one hit and 3 walks while striking out 12.
*Editor note: Hernandez isn’t prospect eligible any longer with 65.2 IP in majors last year, but his one game performance vs. Oklahoma City on 5/22 was worthy of the Triple-A honor.

Logan Allen, LHP (San Diego Padres #11)
El Paso Chihuahuas (7 IP, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB, 3 H)

J.P. Feyereisen, RHP (New York Yankees, NR)
Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (3 G, 5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 11 K, 1 W, 1 SV)
In his 3rd outing of the week, Feyereisen mowed down the Syracuse Mets to get the W, going 2.1 IP without giving up a hit and striking out 7.

Double-A

Hitter: Joshua Rojas, UT (Houston Astros #37)
Corpus Christi Hooks (.516/.571/1.194, 6 HR, 16 H, 7 RBI, 3 2B, 3 SO, 4 BB)
16 hits in 31 at bats will usually get you considered for POTW honors, but when you throw in nine extra base hits, six of which are round trippers, you’re usually a shoo-in. Rojas was giving opposing Texas League pitchers fits all week as he was both mashing and drawing walks.

Honorable Mention:
Abraham Toro, 3B (Houston Astros #15)
Corpus Christi Hooks (.536/.606/.893, 15 H, 2 HR, 1 3B, 2 2B)

Pitcher: Kyle Muller, LHP (Atlanta Braves #11)
Mississippi Braves (12.2 IP, 2 W, 1 ER, 17 K, 4 BB, 6 H)
Muller got two starts and two wins for Mississippi last week. The big lefty was solid in his May 20th outing against Birminghman where he tossed 5.2 innings of one run, three hit ball. However, he was simply exceptional in his seven shutout innings against Jacksonville.

Honorable Mention:
Tony Santillan, RHP (Cincinnati Reds #8)
Chattanooga Lookouts (11.1 IP, 2 ER, 12 K, 4 BB)

 

High-A

Hitter: Ryan Dorow, INF (Texas Rangers, NR)
Down East Wood Ducks (.320/.419/.840, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 3 SO, 4 BB)
Dorow led all High-A leagues with four homers last week and while he added just one more extra base hit to the stat line, he did it all while only striking out three times. Dorow tailed off towards the end of the week, but was on fire for the first handful of games including three multi hit games.

Honorable Mention:
Luis Castro, INF (Tampa Bay Rays #48)
Lancaster JetHawks (.421/.607/.947, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 8 H)

Pitcher: Jake Latz, LHP (Texas Rangers #38)
Down East Wood Ducks (10 IP, 2 W, 1 ER, 4 H, 16 K, 5 BB)
Latz has tossed exactly five innings in each of his last four starts, including both last week. He added two wins to his record, but the lefty really impressed by tallying up 16 strikeouts over his combined 10 innings.

Honorable Mention:
Kyle Bradish, RHP (Los Angeles Angels #19)
Inland Empire 66ers (5.1 IP, 0 ER, 12 K, 2 BB, 1 H)

Single-A

Hitter: Niko Hulsizer, OF (Los Angeles Dodgers #42)
Great Lakes Loons (.313/.333/.844, 5 HR, 2 2B, 9 RBI)
Hulsizer struck out 10 times and didn’t draw a single walk last week, but he did lead all of Single-A in homers. He added a couple of doubles to improve the slugging percentage and hit safely in all seven games last week, spreading his production across the entire week.

Honorable Mention:
David Fry, C (Milwaukee Brewers #39)
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (.394/.429/.606, 13 H, 1 HR, 2 SB)

Pitcher: Chris Vallimont, RHP (Miami Marlins, NR)
Clinton LumberKings (13 IP, W, 18 K, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 BB)
If we gave an overall award for prospect of the week it would go to Vallimont. The 22-year-old tossed seven hitless innings in his first outing of last week then allowed just one hit in his second start. Vallimont struck out nine in each outing en route to POTW honors.

Colten Schmidt, RHP (Colorado Rockies, NR)
Asheville Tourists (13 IP, 16 K, 10 H, 0 ER, 1 BB)

Austin Schulfer, RHP (Minnesota Twins, NR)
Cedar Rapids Kernels (1 GS, W, 5 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K)
