MLB Draft Day 1 Recap (and a Look Forward)

Ace (@acemilb) listed his top 150 draft-eligible prospects yesterday. Based on that, we are taking a look at:

  1. Biggest steals of Day 1(disregarding signability and impact on money available for signing later picks)
  2. Biggest reaches of Day 1 (including 2 players not even on Ace’s top 150)
  3. Best players still available

Biggest Steals of Day 1

The “biggest steals” are solely depending on Ace’s ranks which considers his opinion on the players’ talents. It does not include signability, slot bonus, or other concerns. So, “biggest steals” could in fact turn out to be an unfortunate pick if team’s are unable to sign the player. Or, it may create a scenario where they have to intentionally draft a number of players they know will sign for underslot money.

Sam Carlson – RHP (selected by Mariners): Ace had Carlson as as his 15th highest ranked player (also ranked 15th by MLB.com), and the Mariners were able to scoop him up with the 55th pick.

Griffin Canning – RHP (selected by Angels) Ace had Canning as his 23rd highest ranked player (ranked 17th by MLB.com), and the Angels were able to select him with the 47th pick.

Biggest Reaches of Day 1

Cory Abbott – RHP (selected by Cubs): Cory was not on Ace’s top 150 list. In fact, he was not in MLB.com’s top 150 either (appearing at #187). Exactly where Abbott would be drafted has been difficult to peg; he has appeared in a wide array of slots, depending on whose mock draft you view. John Sickels listed Abbott as a college pitcher who go earlier than people would expect.

Tommy Doyle – RHP (selected by Rockies): Doyle, like Abbott, was not on the top  150 list. And, also like Abbott, he did not appear in MLB.com’s top 150 either (appearing at little ahead at #168).

Drew Rasmussen – RHP (selected by Rays): Rasmussen has the distinction of being the the lowest ranked player on the top 150 (ranked #105) that was drafted in the 1st round (at pick #31). Ace’s rank was not too far off from MLB (#98). Quite possible Rays (like Cubs and Rockies with their “reaches””) hope to sign Rasmussen underslot.
