Single season and draft-and-hold leagues are either drafting now or starting up soon, pending confirmation to the start of the season (fingers crossed) and prospects always play a part in your drafts. When should we draft them? Will they make an impact? Should I gamble on a prospect over a solid veteran? So many questions! I’m hoping to give you a few answers by looking at which prospects should get called up this season and what type of impact they’ll have on your team. I’ve sorted them into four sections for you to choose from depending on your team’s needs.

High Impact/High Time
High Impact/Low Time
Low Impact/High Time
Low Impact/Low Time

High Impact/High Time

These are players I believe will be on the Opening Day roster OR called up after service time requirements are exhausted (pending the new CBA). They are players who I expect to perform very well (for rookies) and will help your fantasy team this year in the roles they play for their teams.

Low Impact/High Time

These are players who could get more playing time but probably won’t have that great of an impact due to their role (mop-up reliever/backup utility infielder/5th outfielder). I’m not calling any of these players busts by any means but, as we know, many players struggle during their first taste of the majors as they adjust. Take Adolfo, for example. He is out of options and hasn’t had as many at-bats as he needs for his development. Rather than lose him as a free agent, the team may promote him but keep his playing time low as he learns on the job, so to speak. Some of these players will probably struggle in their first (or second, in some cases) taste of the major leagues but that could present buy-low opportunities for next year.

  1. Nice lists, very handy.
I think I’d switch Sam Huff and Joey Bart though. Bart has the starting gig all but nailed down in SF, and Huff strikes out way too much (97 times in 61 minor league games last year).

  2. Thank you, ATG! My thinking was that a contending San Fran team would give more at bats to a veteran catcher with Bart getting more time as a backup but I’m sure they’d rather player Bart over Curt Casalli, if he’s still there. With Huff, I suppose today’s trade for Mitch Garver definitely changes his expected playing time but, I agree, those strikeouts are a concern that he has to work on.
