New York Yankees 2021 Farm System Review

As a whole, the New York Yankees farm system had a lot of success with a combined 284-188 (.661) across all levels, and an eye-popping 596+ run differential. The Yankees transaction log was always busy with multiple prospects called up to the Bronx due to injury and multiple prospects traded at the deadline. In this article, I wanted to highlight some Yankees prospects at each level in the system. The Yankees had some major break-out prospects (Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza) and some players that struggled all season (Deivi Garcia and Estevan Florial).


Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

RHP Luis Gil – Gil made his MLB debut and had great success setting the Yankees, even setting a record for scoreless innings to begin his career at 19. His wildness did rear its ugly head later in the season when he walked 7 batters over 3.1 innings in a start vs the Blue Jays and walked 12 over 13.2 innings in the month of September. Gil had 117 strikeouts, 45 walks, and a 3.97 ERA in 79.1 innings between Somerset and Scranton.

RHP Clarke Schmidt – Schmidt didn’t make his season debut until July due to an elbow strain. He looked very good with the Rail Riders and made a few appearances with the Yankees down the stretch. He struck out 46 with a 2.37 ERA over 38 innings in the minors (10 games/9 starts).
RHP Ron Marinaccio –  Marinaccio was promoted from Somerset to Scranton on May 2nd after having 64 strikeouts and a 1.82 ERA in 39.2 innings with Somerset. His success continued with the RailRiders where he strike out 41 and had a 2.36 ERA in 26.2 innings in what was a breakout this year.
RHP Deivi Garcia – Garcia has had difficulty repeating his delivery at times, and scouts pointed to that as an issue again this spring. This lead to struggles with his location all season and seemed to have messed with his confidence, conviction and ability to execute pitches consistently. He had a discouraging 68BB/97K over 90.2 innings with the RailRiders. Just 22 years old, he has plenty of time to straighten this out though and I believe he will.
RHP JP Sears – Sears had a solid 3.46 ERA with 136 strikeouts and 29 walks in 104 innings between AA and AAA.
LHP Matt Krook – The Minor League Rule 5 draft pick had himself a solid season with 132 strikeouts over 106 innings and a 2.89 ERA between AA and AAA. I was very surprised he didn’t find his way to the Bronx with all the pitching issues there.
OF Estevan Florial – Florial had a very down year but still found himself on the Scranton/Bronx shuttle, being called upΒ a total of seven times. He only hit .219 between stops in AA and AAA striking out 121 times in 347 at bats he also had 17 home runs and 13 steals. He had a strong September getting hits in 8 of 10 games at one point and hitting .254 in the month.

C Donny Sands – Sands had a break out season hitting .261 with 18 home runs between Somerset and Scranton. HeΒ went deep three times in his first four Triple A contest.
1B Chris Gittens – Gittens is just mashed minor league pitching hitting .305 with 15 home runs. He struggled in his major league audition hitting only .111 in 36 at bats. He got his first MLB home run off of Hyun Jin Ryu of the Blue Jays.
RF Trey Amburgey – He set a RailRiders franchise record for consecutive games reaching base (42). This lead up to him making his MLB debut in mid July. He strained his hamstring a few days later and ended up on the IL and never got recalled from the minors after that due to the Yankees getting multiple players at the trade deadline.

Double-A Somerset Patriots

RHP Luis Medina – One of 2 Yankees to play in the Futures Game (Dominguez being the other) Medina had a great year with a 3.39 ERA with 133 K in 106.1 innings (Double-A and High-A combined). Medina took a sizable step forward with his control and command, really helping his chances to stick in the rotation.
RHP Randy Vasquez – Randy pitched to a 2.52 ERA with 130 strike outs in 107.1 innings between Tampa, Hudson Valley and Somerset.
LHP Ken Waldichuk – BetweenΒ Hudson Valley and Somerset, Waldichuk had a solid season striking out 163 in 110 innings and a 3.03 ERA.
RHP Hayden Wesneski – Hayden received a mid September call up to Scranton to finish the final stretch there. Wesneski had a combined 3.25 ERA with 151 strikeouts in 130.1 innings pitched in 3 stops Hudson Valley, Somerset and Scranton.
SS Oswald Peraza – Peraza received a mid September call up to Scranton after spending time with Hudson Valley and Somerset to finish Β after hitting .297 with 17 home runs, 26 2Bs and 36 steals between Hudson Valley and Somerset. In 8 games in Scranton, he hit .286 with a homer.
3B Oswaldo Cabrera – Like Peraza and Wesneski, Cabrera received a mid September call up to Scranton to finish the final stretch. Cabrera had a break out showing good power and speed in Somerset recording 24 home runs, 29 doubles and 20 steals and a .256 batting average. In 9 games with the RailRiders, he hit .500 with 5 homers and 11 RBI.

CF Brandon Lockridge – Had a good season hitting .298 with 13 home runs and 18 steals between Hudson Valley and Somerset.
1B Dermis Garcia – Garcia hit just .210. Over half of his overall hits were for extra bases (81 hits, 11 doubles, 31 home runs)! Just too much swing and miss but the power is undeniable.
C Josh Breaux – Breaux hit .249 with 23 home runs between Hudson Valley and Somerset.

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades

SS Anthony Volpe – Volpe had a true break out season, vaulting him to a 16th overall ranking in the Prospects1500 Top 210 prospects earlier this month. He hit .294 between Tampa and Hudson Valley to go along with 27 home runs, 35 doubles and 33 steals.

SS Andres Chaparro – Chaparo had a solid season hitting .267 with 15 home runs between Hudson Valley and Tampa.
DH Everson Pereira – Pereira is the only minor leaguer to hit 20 or more home runs in less than 200 at bats (20 home runs in 188 at bats). He ended the season hitting .303 with the Renegades.
OF Jake Sanford: Sanford hit .285 with 16 homers in 385 plate appearances.
DH Austin Wells – Wells was very streaky during the season. At one point going 1-26 with 15Ks and batting just .222 in August. Then he went on a tear in September hitting .357 and putting the ball in play much more to end the season hitting .264 on the season. Wells is off to a blistering start in the Arizona Fall League, and the loud performance against advanced pitching is a definite encouragement.
OF Elijah Dunham – This free agent signing hit .263 to go along with 13 home runs, 25 doubles and 28 steals.
RHP Matt Sauer – It was a solid season for the 2017 second-rounder, though his ERA looks a bit inflated thanks to a 6 run and 8 run outing. (4.69)
C Anthony Seigler – Seigler struggled all season only batting .219 while twice spending time on the IL.
RHP Beck Way – Way looked great with Tampa having a 2.68 ERA over 15 games (14 starts) but, struggled in 4 starts with Hudson Valley owning a 7.71 ERA.

Low-A Tampa Tarpons

SS Trey Sweeney – The 20th overall pick in the 2021 draft got off to a rough start in Tampa going 0-14 Β to start his career. He then got hot and ended the season hitting .261 with 7 home runs between FCL and Tampa.

CF Jasson Dominguez – Dominguez had a solid season hitting .252. His season included a on-base streak of 26 games. Dominguez represented the Yankees proudly in the Futures Game in Colorado and netted the 26th overall prospect rating in the end of season Prospects1500 Top 210 list.
C Antonio Gomez – Struggled with Tampa starting 1-for-17 he hit .263 between FCL and Tampa.
LF Ryder Green– Green only hit .235 between FCL and Tampa. He struck out multiple times in 13 of his last 17 games of the season. His season ended after breaking his nose getting hit by a pitch and he was placed on the IL.
2B Cooper Bowman – The 4th rounder in the 2021 draft hit .255 between FCL and Tampa.
LHP Clay Aguilar – Aguilar had a 1.90 ERA with 71 strike outs over 52 innings mostly in relief between Tampa and Hudson Valley.

1B/OF Anthony Garcia – Between FCL and Tampa Garcia hit .306 with 14 home runs and 15 steals in just 39 games (121 at bats) showing off his nice power/speed combo.
RHP Β Yoendrys Gomez – It was basically a lost season for Gomez after spending time on the Covid IL. Gomez only pitched 23.2 innings with a 3.42 ERA and 29 strike outs.
3B Tyler Hardman – Hardman the Yankees 5th round pick in 2021 hit .243 but showed good power and speed.

Florida Complex League (Rookie)

RHP Alfred Vega – Vega had a 1.70 ERA in 37 inning striking out 46. (12 games, 7 starts)
SS Alexander Vargas– Vargas hit .273 in 150 at bats. He showed off his good speed stealing 17 bases.
OF Raimfer Salinas – Salinas slashed .250 to go with 6 home runs and 10 stolen bases.
C Alex Guerrero – In 29 games between FCL and High-A he hit .403 with a .475 OBP.
LHP Brock Selvidge – The 2021 third rounder pitched just 3.2 innings for FCL.

Dominican Summer League (Rookie)

RHP Osiel Rodriguez – Rodriguez pitched just 9.2 innings for DSL.
C Agustin Ramirez – Ramirez hit .220 in 109 at bats for DSL.
2B/SS Hans Montero – Montero hit .200 to go along with 16 steals in 191 at bats for DSL.
LHP Allen Facundo – In 14 games (11 starts) Fecundo had 84 strike outs over 48.2 innings.
OF Fidel Montero – Montero hit just .193 but displayed his good speed stealing 19 bases in 171 at bats.

  1. What about Weissert? Had solid numbers he maintained from AA through AAA. Good movement on that slider and pretty good change from that lower arm slot. Scranton had some great pitching this year ,feel he deserves a mention. Warren too! Big league experience and good numbers should have at least given him a shot during that crazy shuttle bus of players going up and down.

    • Hey Scott thanks for reading. Greg Weissert had a great year in relief after being average in 2019 and pervious years before. He is Rule 5 eligible this year. I didn’t mention him because Scranton and other teams had so many players deserving of a mention. Warren didn’t get mentioned because he’s not a prospect. I personally as a Yankees fan would have loved to see him in the Yankees pen over a few pitchers that were in it this year. Warren will be a free agent this upcoming off season.
