One Detroit Tigers Prospect To Watch This Year

2019 is going to be all about the future for the Detroit Tigers. The big league club seems to be on a crash course for 100 losses, especially after losing Michael Fulmer to TJ surgery (exactly why I don’t trust pitchers).  A lot of people, not just me, will have their eyes just as much on the Detroit Tigers farm system as the major league ball team as the year unfolds.

There are a lot of names that I am looking forward to watching as they develop. Coming up with a single name was difficult. For the Detroit Tigers to become relevant again quite a few of their prospects are going to have to make a major impact at the highest level.

I wanted to talk about a name that wasn’t obvious, so checked off the list were guys like Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Isaac Paredes and Daz Cameron. You probably already know about my feelings on pitching, even if after the opening paragraph, so you can check off more guys like Alex Faedo, Beau Burrows, Kyle Funkhouser, Franklin Perez, Zac Houston, Tarik Skubal, etc. It needed to be a bat that isn’t someone that immediately comes to mind but has the potential to impact the team on an everyday basis down the road. The names I considered were Parker Meadows, Wenceel Perez, Kody Clemens, Willi Castro, Brock Deatherage, Kingston Liniak, Eliezer Alfonso and Esney Chacon.

so THE Detroit Tigers prospect I’m most looking forward to watching in 2019…

The winner is…………

Deatherage was drafted in the 10th round of the 2018 draft.  He has been nothing but impressive since he first stepped on a field professionally. His speed is currently his calling card, both in the field and on the base paths. He has legitimate 70 speed and possibly more. The scariest part of his game may very well be that his power will surprise you. He is a true 20/20 threat that would fit at the top of any MLB lineup if he reaches his projections. He does need to work on his hit tool but he did a lot to help you forget those worries by slashing .326/.385/.504/.890.

Deatherage is off to an incredible start and he is someone that you should keep a close eye on in 2019. If he continues hitting and playing defense like he did in 2018 he will reach AA at some point in 2019. He would be well on his way to grinding his way easily into at least the top 10 in my rankings list as early as possibly this years midseason rankings.
